1) Will a 3/8 x 6 inch hex lag bolt hold in treated lumber outdoors?
The Metallics JBLS27 lag bolt is zinc plated steel and is specified for use in wood in non-corrosive environments. Zinc plating handles incidental moisture, but treated lumber and exterior exposure are corrosive conditions, so for those jobs use a hot dip galvanized or 18-8 stainless lag instead.
2) Can I use a Metallics lag bolt on a federally funded Buy American job?
No. The JBLS27 lag bolt is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant, with country of origin listed as multiple. For a project with domestic sourcing requirements you need a fastener certified to those provisions.
3) Can I use this lag bolt into concrete or masonry block?
No. This is a wood lag with a gimlet point, meant for electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning anchoring into wood framing. Concrete or block needs a sleeve anchor, wedge anchor or a screw anchor rated for masonry, not a lag screw.
4) What size pilot hole and wrench do I need for the Metallics JBLS27 lag bolt?
Shank outside diameter runs 0.360 to 0.388 inch (nominal 3/8) with 7 threads per inch, right hand, and a gimlet point that starts itself in wood. Head is a hex measuring 0.544 to 0.562 inch across, so a 9/16 inch socket or wrench drives it. Pilot drilling is still good practice in hardwood or near board edges to avoid splitting.
5) Is the Metallics JBLS27 a standard dimension lag bolt, or a proprietary head?
Dimensions conform to ASME B18.2.1-1996, so the hex head and 3/8-7 thread match any standard lag screw of that size. Nothing proprietary about it, and it interchanges with other ASME B18.2.1 lags on the same hole.
6) What is the strength rating on these 3/8 inch lag bolts?
Minimum tensile strength is 60,000 psi, with hardness in the Rockwell B70 to B100 range, made from AISI 1006 to 1022 low carbon steel. That is the ordinary commercial lag screw grade used for hanging unistrut, conduit racks, equipment supports and blocking in wood. It is not a high strength heat treated fastener, so do not substitute it where a drawing calls for a specific grade bolt.
