Metallics UB014 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What size U-bolt is the Metallics UB014, and what does the 5/16-18 x 2-11/16 x 2 mean?
The UB014 is a 5/16-18 U-bolt: 5/16 inch rod diameter with 18 threads per inch, right hand thread, cut to 2-11/16 inches with a 2 inch inside width across the legs. Pick it by the 2 inch width first, since that is the opening the bolt has to straddle, then confirm the 2-11/16 leg length gives you enough thread past your strut or plate for the nuts.
2) Do the nuts come with the Metallics UB014 U-bolt or do I have to order them separately?
Two hex nuts ship with each U-bolt, so nothing extra is needed to land it. The nuts are Grade A per ASTM A563 and the U-bolt itself is ASTM A307 steel, which is the normal low-carbon pairing for general clamping and pipe support work rather than a high-strength structural joint. Washers are not part of the assembly.
3) Will a 5/16-18 U-bolt with a 2 inch inside width clamp 1-1/2 inch pipe or conduit?
Yes. With 2 inches between the legs, the UB014 clears the outside diameter of nominal 1-1/2 inch rigid pipe and conduit, which runs just under 1.9 inches, and seats it against a strut or support plate. Anything larger than that will not fit between the legs, and anything much smaller will sit loose in the bend.
4) Is the Metallics UB014 U-bolt okay for damp or outdoor runs?
It is zinc plated steel, which handles general indoor and sheltered outdoor service and resists incidental moisture. For continuous wet, coastal, or corrosive-chemical exposure, a stainless U-bolt is the better call, since zinc plating on steel will eventually give up in those conditions.
5) Does the Metallics UB014 U-bolt qualify for Buy American and ARRA jobs?
Metallics lists the UB014 as both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, which is what a government, school, or healthcare procurement file usually needs on a fastener line item. Country of origin is listed as multiple, so if your spec requires a single documented origin, that is the detail to pin down on the order.
6) Are the Metallics UB014 threads standard so I can use my own nuts or couplings?
Threads are cut to ANSI/ASME B1.1 at 18 per inch, right hand, and the nut dimensions follow ASME B18.2.2. That means any standard 5/16-18 nut or threaded accessory will run on the legs, which is useful if a job calls for a lock nut or a flange nut instead of the plain hex nuts supplied.
7) How many U-bolts are in a bag of Metallics UB014, and is there a minimum order?
The UB014 is bagged 10 per pack with a minimum of 10 each, so one bag is the smallest quantity. Bag weight is listed at 653 g. Other sizes and quantities can be had by request if the 2 inch width or the 10-piece pack does not match the run you are hanging.
8) What wrench or socket do I need for the nuts on a 5/16-18 U-bolt like the UB014?
The hex nuts measure 0.489 to 0.500 inch across the flats, so a 1/2 inch wrench or socket is the tool. Nut height runs 0.258 to 0.273 inch, which is the standard dimension you would account for when figuring how much thread has to project past your support.
9) Is this U-bolt only for electrical work or can plumbing and HVAC crews use it?
Metallics lists the UB014 for the electrical, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning trades, so the same bolt is used to clamp conduit, pipe, and equipment supports across all of them. It is a general-purpose zinc plated steel U-bolt with two hex nuts, not an electrical-only part.
