Metallics UB016 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size and pitch are the Metallics UB016 U-bolt legs?
The UB016 U-bolt is threaded 5/16-18, right hand, to the ANSI/ASME B1.1 thread standard. So 18 threads per inch on a 5/16 inch leg, and any standard 5/16-18 hex nut or washer you already stock on the truck will run on it.
2) Do the nuts come with the Metallics UB016 U-bolt or do I order them separately?
Two hex nuts ship with each U-bolt, so nothing extra is needed to make up the clamp. The nuts are Grade A per ASTM A563 and the U-bolt body is ASTM A307 steel.
3) What size pipe or conduit will the UB016 U-bolt wrap?
Inside opening is 3 inches across with a 3-11/16 inch leg length, so it is sized to go around a nominal 2-1/2 inch pipe or conduit and still leave thread for the two nuts. If your run is larger or smaller, the UB series is made in other sizes.
4) Does the Metallics UB016 U-bolt qualify for a Buy American or ARRA funded job?
Metallics lists the UB016 as both Buy American compliant and ARRA compliant. Country of origin is shown as multiple, so if your specification requires a single documented origin, get the certification for the lot you receive.
5) Is the Metallics UB016 U-bolt coated for damp or outdoor locations?
Steel with a zinc finish. That handles ordinary indoor and protected outdoor mechanical rooms and conduit racks. For coastal, pool chemical, or continuously wet exposure, specify stainless rather than zinc plated steel.
6) Can I buy a single UB016 U-bolt or is there a minimum?
It is sold bagged in tens, with a 10 each order minimum. Plan on a bag per order rather than loose pieces.
7) What wrench size do the hex nuts on this 5/16-18 U-bolt take?
Nut across-flats measures 0.489 to 0.500 inch with a height of 0.258 to 0.273 inch, dimensioned to ASME B18.2.2. That is a 1/2 inch wrench or socket.
8) Is this U-bolt only for electrical work, or can I use it on pipe and ductwork?
Metallics lists the UB016 for the electrical, plumbing, heating and air conditioning trades. Same part clamps conduit on a strut rack, hangs pipe, or secures mechanical lines, as long as the 3 inch opening suits the run.
