Metallics BLS12GB – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Metallics BLS12GB 5/16 x 2 lag bolt be used outdoors or in damp, corrosive locations?
Yes. The BLS12GB is a galvanized steel lag bolt specifically intended for corrosive environments, so exterior strut runs, damp mechanical rooms, and treated-lumber attachments are within its intended use. The galvanized coating is the only finish this bolt is offered in.
2) What size pilot hole and socket do I need for a 5/16 x 2 hex lag bolt?
Shank outside diameter runs 0.298 to 0.324 inches, so a pilot hole sized just under the shank is what you want in solid wood. The hex head measures 0.484 to 0.500 inches across the flats, which is a 1/2 inch wrench or socket. Threads are 9 per inch with a gimlet point, so the bolt starts itself once the pilot is drilled.
3) Is this lag bolt strong enough for hanging conduit, strut, and pipe supports?
It is a full-bodied lag bolt with 60,000 psi minimum tensile strength and a Rockwell B70 to B100 hardness range, made from AISI 1006-1022 steel. That is standard commercial lag stock and it is what the electrical, plumbing, and HVAC trades use for hanging strut, conduit, and pipe supports off wood framing. For an engineered load on a drawing, work from the published allowable withdrawal value for your lumber species rather than the bolt's tensile rating.
4) How many 5/16 x 2 lag bolts come in a box, and can I buy fewer?
The BLS12GB ships as a box of 850 bolts, and 850 count is the order minimum, so it is a full-box purchase rather than a loose-count item. The box weighs 34.09 lbs. Metallics does make other sizes and pack quantities in the BLS and JBLS series available on request if 850 of this size is more than the job needs.
5) Is a lag bolt the right fastener for anchoring to concrete or masonry?
No. A hex lag bolt with spaced threads and a gimlet point is a wood fastener, driven into timber or into a lead or plastic anchor shield set in masonry. Driven straight into concrete or block it will not hold. For concrete, use a wedge anchor, sleeve anchor, or screw anchor rated for the base material instead.
6) Does this Metallics lag bolt meet a dimensional standard I can cite on a submittal?
Head and thread geometry conform to ASME B18.2.1-1996, the dimensional standard for square and hex bolts and screws, and the steel is specified to AISI 1006-1022. Both are citable on a submittal for a hex lag screw.
7) Does the BLS12GB qualify for Buy American or ARRA funded jobs?
Metallics lists the BLS12GB as both ARRA compliant and Buy American compliant, which is what a government, school, or healthcare procurement file usually needs on a fastener line item. Country of origin is listed as multiple, so if your specification requires a single named country of manufacture, confirm the origin on the actual carton you receive.
8) Do lag bolts like this come with washers, or do I order those separately?
Washers are not part of the box. The BLS12GB is bolts only, 850 to a box, so if your detail calls for a flat or malleable washer under the hex head, order it as a separate line. On wood framing a washer is normal practice to keep the head from crushing into the surface.
