Metallics SBH805 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics SBH805 hex cap screw 304/18-8 or 316 stainless?
The SBH805 is 316 stainless steel, not 18-8. The molybdenum in 316 gives it better corrosion resistance than 18-8 and better strength at elevated temperature, which is why it gets specified for coastal, wastewater, pool chemical and other chloride-heavy environments. Both alloys are austenitic, so if your drawing calls out 18-8 and the environment is wet or salty, 316 is the upgrade rather than a substitution problem.
2) What thread does the Metallics SBH805 take, and what nut size do I need?
It is a 5/8-11 UNC bolt: 11 threads per inch with a measured major diameter of 0.6170 to 0.6250 in. It mates with any standard 5/8-11 coarse nut or 5/8-11 tapped hole. It will not thread into a 5/8-18 fine-thread hole.
3) How strong is a 316 stainless 5/8-11 cap screw compared with a plain steel grade 5 bolt?
Tensile is 100,000 to 150,000 psi minimum with 65,000 psi minimum yield, and hardness runs Rockwell B95 to C32. That puts it in the same general tensile range as a medium-strength carbon bolt, but the yield is lower than a grade 5, so if the connection was engineered around grade 5 or grade 8 values, have the load checked before swapping stainless in. Where corrosion is the governing problem rather than peak load, the 316 is the right call.
4) Does the Metallics SBH805 stainless cap screw meet Buy American or ARRA requirements on a federal job?
No. The SBH805 is not Buy American compliant and is not ARRA compliant; country of origin is listed as multiple. If your project has domestic-sourcing language in the spec, this part will not satisfy it and you will need a domestically produced fastener instead.
5) How many bolts come in a box of Metallics SBH805?
SBH805 ships as a box of 25 each, and 25 is the order minimum. Other sizes and quantities are available by request if you need a different length or a larger run for a single job.
6) Should I use a hex cap screw or an anchor bolt for mounting equipment to a concrete pad?
A 5/8-11 hex cap screw like the SBH805 is a through-bolt or tapped-hole fastener, 5 in. long with a hex head for wrenching. It is not a concrete anchor and has no expansion or adhesive mechanism. For a concrete pad you want a wedge anchor, a stud anchor or a threaded rod set in epoxy; use the cap screw for bolting steel to steel, strut, equipment bases and bolted flange connections.
7) Will stainless bolts cause a problem where they contact galvanized or aluminum steel?
Pairing a 316 stainless bolt with aluminum or galvanized members puts two dissimilar metals in contact, and in a wet or salty location that drives galvanic corrosion of the less noble metal. Standard practice is to isolate with nylon or neoprene washers and sleeves, or to keep nut, washer and bolt all in stainless so the fastener assembly itself stays consistent.
8) What clearance hole should I drill for a 5/8-11 stainless cap screw?
With a major diameter of 0.6170 to 0.6250 in., a 11/16 in. hole gives the normal clearance fit for a 5/8 bolt and leaves a little room for alignment on a multi-hole pattern. Drill 5/8 nominal only if you need a close fit and the holes line up exactly.
