Metallics JMHTB12401 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Is the Metallics JMHTB12401 M12 x 40 bolt fully threaded, or does it have an unthreaded shank?
Fully threaded. The JMHTB12401 is a hex tap bolt, so the threads run all the way up the 40mm shank to directly beneath the head, which also carries a washer face. That makes it the right choice when you need thread engagement right at the surface of the joint, such as a short grip into a tapped hole or a thin bracket stack. If you need an unthreaded grip length under the head, a hex cap screw rather than a tap bolt is what you want.
2) What thread pitch is the M12 Metallics class 10.9 tap bolt, and will it thread into a standard M12 nut?
Pitch is 1.75mm right-hand thread, which is the standard coarse pitch for M12. So it mates with any standard coarse M12 nut or M12 x 1.75 tapped hole. It will not thread into a fine-pitch M12 x 1.25 or M12 x 1.5 hole.
3) When should I step up to a class 10.9 bolt instead of using 8.8?
Go to 10.9 when the joint needs more tensile capacity than a class 8.8 fastener can carry. This bolt is heat-treated high alloy steel rated at 150,800 psi minimum tensile and 136,300 psi minimum yield, with a hardness of Rockwell C32-39. It is the grade commonly specified in automotive and fleet work for highly loaded, high-torque connections. For general low-load bracketry, 8.8 is usually sufficient and easier to source.
4) Is the Metallics JMHTB12401 bolt coated, and is it suitable for outdoor or damp locations?
The bolt is steel with a zinc finish, which gives moderate corrosion resistance for indoor and sheltered applications. Zinc plating is not a marine or continuous-wet coating, so for exposed exterior or washdown service you would want a hot-dip galvanized or stainless fastener instead. Keep in mind that plating and high-strength class 10.9 steel together need care on hydrogen embrittlement sensitive applications.
5) How many bolts come in a jar of the Metallics JMHTB12401, and can I buy a smaller quantity?
It ships as a jar of 50 pieces, and 50 count is the order minimum, so the jar is the smallest unit. Metallics notes other sizes and quantities in the MHTB and JMHTB series are available by request if 50 of the M12 x 40 is not the right break for your job.
6) Does the Metallics M12 hex tap bolt meet Buy American or ARRA requirements for a public project?
No. The JMHTB12401 is manufactured in China, and that rules it out where a project carries a domestic-content requirement. If your spec calls for domestic sourcing, you will need a US-made class 10.9 equivalent rather than this item.
