Sta-Kon D36U – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can the Sta-Kon D36U be used on aluminum wire?
No. It is a copper terminal, rated by the manufacturer for copper conductor. Terminating aluminum in a copper-only lug risks galvanic corrosion and a high resistance joint. For aluminum you need a lug marked AL or AL9CU.
2) Why is the Sta-Kon D36U ring terminal bent at 90 degrees instead of flat?
It is a 90 degree bend ring terminal, so the ring sits perpendicular to the wire barrel. That is what you want when the conductor runs parallel to the mounting surface and the stud comes out of it at a right angle, such as terminal pads on panel boards, motor terminal boxes, or stud blocks tight to a back plate. A flat (straight) ring terminal in that position forces a hard bend in the copper right at the barrel.
3) Is the Sta-Kon D36U insulated, and do I need to sleeve it?
No insulation on this one. The D36U is a non-insulated brazed seam ring terminal, bare copper, so if the application needs the barrel covered for clearance or color coding you add heat shrink or a nylon sleeve separately. Non-insulated barrels are also what you want when the joint will see soldering heat or when you need to inspect the crimp.
4) Is the Sta-Kon D36U ring terminal UL listed for an inspected install?
Yes. It carries UL file E9809. That is the reference an inspector or submittal reviewer will ask for on a terminated conductor in a listed assembly.
5) What does brazed seam mean on this ring terminal, and does it matter for the crimp?
Brazed seam means the barrel's seam is closed with braze rather than left as a butted open seam. The barrel will not split open along the seam under crimp pressure, which matters on an 8 AWG conductor where crimp force is high. Use a die matched to 8 AWG non-insulated terminals.
6) Is the Sta-Kon D36U made in the USA for Buy American or government jobs?
Country of origin on the D36U is the United States, which is what procurement needs for Buy American documentation on federal, state, and institutional work.
