Burndy YA2CA3 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Can a Burndy aluminum HYLUG be used on copper conductors, or is it aluminum only?
Both. The lug body is wrought aluminum with an electro-tin plated finish, and it is rated for use on aluminum and copper conductors. That is what the tin plating buys you: it keeps the aluminum barrel from sitting bare against a copper conductor or a copper bus pad, which is the corrosion path that kills a termination over time. One catalog number covers you on a job where some feeders are aluminum and some are copper.
2) Do I need to brush on Penetrox before crimping a Burndy HYLUG aluminum lug?
No. HYLUG-style lugs ship factory prefilled with PENETROX oxide inhibiting compound in the barrel, so there is nothing to add before you insert the conductor. The barrel is also internally bevelled, so a stranded conductor pushes in without birdcaging the strands at the mouth. Wire brush the conductor as your normal practice, seat it to the bottom of the barrel, and crimp.
3) What voltage are Burndy HYLUG compression lugs rated for, and can I use them in a 15kV or 35kV termination?
The family is rated 600V minimum through 35kV maximum, so a 15kV or a 25kV termination is inside the range and 35kV is the ceiling. That covers utility substation work, transformer and motor terminations, and medium voltage feeders, as well as ordinary 600V panel and MCC landings. Above 35kV, this is not the connector.
4) Are Burndy HYLUG aluminum compression lugs UL Listed for inspection?
Yes, UL Listed, and manufactured to UL468A-468B, the standards for wire connectors. That is the paperwork an AHJ or a facility engineer asks for on a service or feeder termination. Note it is UL Listed rather than UL Recognized, and it does not carry a CSA, cULus, or ETL mark, so on a job that specifically calls for CSA acceptance in Canada you will want a different connector.
5) What is the difference between a 2-hole lug and a single-hole lug, and when do I need two holes?
Two bolt holes stop the lug from rotating on the pad. On a single-hole lug the connection can spin under vibration or under fault current magnetic force, back off, and go high resistance. That is why 2-hole terminations are the norm on grounding and bonding, on switchgear and transformer pads, on motor and VFD terminations, and anywhere the equipment pad is drilled for two studs. These Burndy HYLUGs are 2-hole with a straight, standard tongue and no inspection window, so the tongue lands flat on a standard NEMA-drilled pad rather than needing an angled or offset approach. If your equipment pad has one stud, a 2-hole lug will not mount to it.
6) This lug has no inspection window. How do I confirm the conductor is bottomed out in the barrel before crimping?
There is no window on these, so you cannot see the conductor end once it is in. Measure instead: lay the conductor alongside the barrel, mark the insulation at the barrel mouth, strip to that mark, and push the conductor in until the insulation meets the mouth. The barrel is internally bevelled so the strands feed in cleanly. If your crew wants visual verification on a critical termination, a window-style HYLUG in the same size range is the version to order instead.
7) Is a short barrel Burndy HYLUG going to fit in a tight transformer or switchgear termination compartment?
Short barrel is exactly the version to reach for when the compartment is tight. The body is a short-barrel, standard-wall design without an inspection window, which keeps the overall length behind the tongue down compared with a long-barrel or two-crimp lug. That is the difference between the lug clearing the cable entry in a crowded MCC bucket or transformer throat and having to bend the conductor harder than you want. Where you have depth and want more crimps for a higher pullout, a long barrel version is the better pick.
8) Can I crimp a Burndy compression lug with a mechanical set-screw tool, or do I need a hydraulic crimper?
These are compression lugs, not mechanical set-screw lugs. There is no screw to torque. The barrel has to be crimped with a die-based compression tool, and at 250 through 500 MCM that means a hydraulic head. The die index and number of crimps are stamped or specified per catalog number, so match the die to the lug you are installing rather than to the wire size alone. If you want a connector you can land with a hex key and a torque wrench, you want a mechanical lug instead of the HYLUG line.
9) Are Burndy HYLUG aluminum lugs RoHS compliant for a spec that requires it?
The RoHS compliance status on the aluminum HYLUG is CM, which is the compliant-with-exemption designation used across the Burndy line rather than a blanket unrestricted claim. For a procurement package that asks the question, that is the value to put on the submittal, alongside the UL Listing and the UL468A-468B conformance.
10) Will a tin-plated aluminum lug hold up outdoors or in a corrosive plant environment?
The electro-tin plating on the wrought aluminum body is there for corrosion resistance, and the prefilled PENETROX in the barrel keeps oxide from re-forming on the conductor inside the crimp. Between the two, this is the version to use in substations, exterior pad-mount gear, and damp or chemically aggressive industrial spaces rather than a bare aluminum lug. Plated is confirmed on every catalog number in the range, so you do not have to specify it separately.
