1) What wire size does the Burndy YA28 HYLUG compression lug take?
The YA28 HYLUG terminal is sized for 4/0 AWG stranded copper conductor only. It is a single-size compression lug, not a range-taking connector, so a 3/0 or 250 kcmil conductor needs a different YA part. Strip 1-1/8 inches of insulation to bottom the conductor in the barrel.
2) Which stud size should I order, 1/4 inch or 3/8 inch?
Match the bolt or stud already in your panel, busbar, or ground bar. The YA28 comes two ways: YA28L2 with a 1/4 inch stud hole and YA28L3 with a 3/8 inch stud hole. A 1/4 inch lug will not pass a 3/8 inch bolt, so measure the landing stud before ordering.
3) What die index do I set my compression tool to for a Burndy YA28 lug?
Die index 15. The lug is also color coded purple, which is the visual cross check on the crimp die and the finished connection. Use the Burndy die matching index 15 in your hydraulic or battery crimper.
4) Can this Burndy copper lug be used on medium voltage cable terminations?
Rated 600V minimum and up to 35kV per UL467, so it covers everything from panel and switchgear work up to medium voltage terminations. It is UL Listed and CSA Approved.
5) Will the pad on this 4/0 lug fit between the studs on my ground bar?
The tongue pad measures 1.02 inches wide with a single mounting hole and a straight (non-offset) tongue, and the barrel outside diameter is 0.69 inches. Overall body length behind the pad is 0.88 inches (the B dimension). If your bar has tight stud spacing, that 1.02 inch pad width is the number that decides whether two lugs land side by side.
6) Is the Burndy YA28 acceptable for grounding and bonding connections?
Yes. It is built to UL467, the grounding and bonding equipment standard, which is why it gets used on ground bars and bonding jumpers as well as ordinary feeder terminations. Tin electroplated copper holds up in damp and corrosive locations.
7) Is this an aluminum or copper lug, and can I put it on aluminum conductor?
It is a copper barrel with tin electroplating, listed for stranded copper conductor at 4/0 AWG. For aluminum or dual rated AL/CU conductor, use a lug listed for that conductor material instead.
8) What is a standard barrel lug and when would I need a long barrel instead?
A standard barrel takes a single crimp of the specified die and is what most panel, switchgear, and ground bar terminations call for. Long barrel versions give more crimp length and higher pull-out strength, which is what specs on high vibration or heavy pull applications usually ask for. The YA28 HYLUG is the standard barrel version with a standard straight tongue.
