1) Will the Klein VDV512-101 Coax Explorer 2 test through a splitter?
No. The Coax Explorer 2 will not test through cable splitters. You have to test each run point to point, so disconnect the leg at the splitter and put a remote on the far end. If your building feed runs through a distribution amp or splitter block, break the run down leg by leg.
2) What coax types does the Klein VDV512-101 work on?
RG59, RG6 and RG6 quad shield, RG7 and RG11. Connection is through F-type, and a coax F adapter is included in the kit along with the four push-on remotes.
3) Can I use the Coax Explorer 2 to figure out which wall plate goes to which cable in the panel?
That is exactly what the four color-coded push-on remotes are for. Put a different colored remote on each of up to four coax drops, then read the tester at the other end: the LED panel tells you PASS, OPEN or SHORT and which remote, meaning which location, is on that cable. One trip to map four runs instead of four.
4) Is it safe to put the Klein Coax Explorer 2 on a live cable feed or an energized circuit?
No. The tester is not for use on powered circuits or outlets. Disconnect the coax from any active source, amplifier or set-top device before testing. It is a continuity and mapping tester, not a voltage instrument.
5) Is the Coax Explorer 2 small enough to carry on a tool belt all day?
It measures 5.75 by 2.313 by 1 inches and weighs 0.29 pounds, with a carrying clip built in. The four remotes and the F adapter snap into a removable holder that clips onto the tester, so the kit travels as one piece instead of loose parts in a pouch.
6) What does the Coax Explorer 2 actually tell me about a bad coax run?
It reports one of three conditions on the LED panel: PASS, OPEN or SHORT, plus which of the four remote locations answered. That tells you whether the run is continuous, broken, or shorted between center conductor and shield, which is usually a badly crimped F connector. It does not give a distance to the fault.
7) Do I need to buy extra remotes to map four TV drops?
No, the VDV512-101 ships as a kit with all four color-coded push-on remotes, the F adapter, the snap-on remote holder and batteries. Nothing else is required to test and map up to four coax locations.
