Camden Door Controls CM-6030 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) How do you reset a Camden CM-6000 locking mushroom button after it has been pressed?
It doesn't reset by hand. The CM-6000 latches mechanically when pushed and stays latched until a key is inserted and turned in the center locking cylinder. That is the point of the device for lock-out and emergency shut-down: once someone hits it, only a keyholder can restore the circuit.
2) Should I order the N/O, N/C, or N/O & N/C version of the Camden CM-6000 red mushroom switch?
All three are maintained contacts, so pick by what the circuit needs. N/O, Maintained is the usual choice when pressing the button must complete a circuit (signal a controller, trigger a release). N/C, Maintained suits fail-safe wiring where the button must break a circuit, such as dropping power to a maglock or shutting equipment down. The N/O & N/C, Maintained version gives you both sets on one button, which is what to order when you need to break one circuit and make another at the same time, or want spare contacts for future use.
3) Will the Camden CM-6000 mushroom switch mount in a standard single gang electrical box?
Yes. It comes on a single gang faceplate, 1/4 inch thick brushed aluminum, and the assembly measures 4-1/2 x 2-3/4 x 1-3/4 inches (114 x 70 x 44 mm). The 1-3/4 inch figure is the depth behind the plate, so allow that much clearance inside the box or backbox for the switch body and wiring.
4) Is a 2-3/8 inch mushroom button too big for a narrow aluminum door frame?
Yes, most likely. The red button alone is 2-3/8 inches (60mm) across on a single gang plate measuring 4-1/2 x 2-3/4 inches, which is wider than a typical storefront stile face. For a narrow frame mount, the SDC 410 Series illuminated push button exit switch is built specifically for narrow frame application. If you want a large mushroom on a wall and just need a smaller footprint, the SDC 430 Series uses a 1-1/2 inch round button and the Dortronics 5210 Series a 1-9/16 inch mushroom on a single gang plate.
5) What is the difference between the Camden CM-6000 and a standard push to exit button?
A normal exit button is momentary: it releases the door while you press it and restores the moment you let go. The CM-6000 is push to lock (maintained) with a key cylinder in the center, so it stays in the pressed state until a key resets it. Use the CM-6000 where you want a condition to hold, lock-down, lock-out, or an emergency shut-down. For everyday egress release, a momentary switch like the Dortronics 5210 Series mushroom or an illuminated SDC 410 Series button is the right device instead.
6) What is a comparable large mushroom emergency switch to the Camden CM-6000 red locking mushroom switch?
The closest peer in size is the SDC 440 Series large mushroom button emergency exit switch, which uses a 2-5/8 inch diameter button against the Camden CM-6000's 2-3/8 inch (60mm) red button. The key functional difference is resetting: the CM-6000 button latches when pushed and cannot be reset until a key is inserted and turned in the center locking cylinder, so specify it where you want the lock-out or emergency shut-down condition held until an authorized person clears it.
7) I have a narrow mullion or hollow metal frame - will the Camden CM-6000 fit, or do I need something else?
The CM-6000 needs a single gang box: its overall plate and body measure 4-1/2 inch x 2-3/4 inch x 1-3/4 inch. For a narrow frame where a single gang plate will not land, the SDC 410 Series is built as an illuminated push button exit switch with a narrow frame mount. The Dortronics 5210 Series is also a single gang plate mount, so it faces the same width constraint as the CM-6000.
8) Can this locking push button be mounted outdoors or in an unheated area?
The operating range runs from -13 F to 158 F (-25 C to 75 C), so unheated garages, loading docks, mechanical rooms and sheltered exterior locations are within spec. Nothing in the data rates the plate for direct weather exposure, so mount it under cover in a weather-resistant backbox if it is going outside.
9) Will a Camden CM-6000 hold up in a school corridor or public area where people abuse the hardware?
That is what the plate is for. The faceplate is 1/4 inch thick aluminum and specified as vandal resistant, and the whole unit is a commercial device. The oversized 2-3/8 inch red mushroom is also easy to find and strike in a panic, which is why these go in for emergency shut-down. If you want a larger button still, the SDC 440 Series uses a 2-5/8 inch diameter heavy duty mushroom.
10) Does the Camden CM-6000 mushroom switch light up like the SDC 410 and 420 switches?
No. The SDC 410 Series is an illuminated push button exit switch with a narrow frame mount, and the SDC 420 Series is an illuminated push button exit switch with 2 inch buttons. The Camden CM-6000 is a non-illuminated 2-3/8 inch red locking mushroom button supplied on a 1/4 inch thick brushed aluminum single gang faceplate. If the drawing calls for an illuminated indication at the button, the SDC 410 or 420 covers that; the CM-6000 signals its state mechanically by staying latched.
11) Which mushroom switch should I specify when the button has to meet exit code requirements?
The SDC 420 Series is described as an illuminated push button exit switch with 2 inch buttons and code compliance, so it is the one to raise with the AHJ for a required exit device. The Camden CM-6000 is purpose-built for lock-out and emergency shut-down applications, where the latching key-reset action is the point rather than free egress.
12) Can I switch a load directly with the Camden CM-6000, and what contact arrangements are there?
Yes. The Camden CM-6000 is rated 6 A at 30 VDC and is offered with N/O maintained, N/C maintained, or combined N/O and N/C maintained contacts, so you can pick the arrangement that matches whether the circuit needs to break or make on the lock-out. It is a hardwired device with no wireless communication, and it operates from -13 F to 158 F (-25 C to 75 C) for unheated or exterior-adjacent locations.
13) What finish does the Camden CM-6000 mushroom switch plate come in, and can I get the button in another color?
The plate is brushed aluminum as standard, and the button on the CM-6000 2-3/8 inch locking mushroom is red across all three contact configurations. Red is the convention for emergency and lock-out functions, which is the application this button is built for.
