Metallics 3816GT – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What thread size does the Metallics 3816GT tap cut?
The 3816GT cuts a 3/8-16 thread, which is the UNC (coarse) pitch for 3/8 inch. If your bolt or rod is 3/8-16, this is the matching tap. For 3/8-24 fine thread you need a different tap.
2) What is a bottoming tap used for, and do I need a taper tap first?
A bottoming tap has almost no lead chamfer, so it cuts threads nearly to the bottom of a blind hole. That is what the 3816GT is for: finishing threads deep in a closed hole, such as threading a junction box boss or a drilled-and-tapped bracket where a bolt has to seat near the base. Because there is little lead, it is hard to start a fresh hole cleanly, so in a blind hole most people start with a taper or plug tap and then switch to the bottoming tap to run the threads out to full depth. In a through hole you usually do not need a bottoming tap at all.
3) Is the Metallics 3816GT a hand tap or can I run it in a drill?
It is a gun tap, also called a spiral point tap. The spiral point pushes chips forward out ahead of the tap, so it is made for powered tapping in a drill, tapping head, or impact-type tapper rather than slow hand work. Pushing chips forward means it suits through holes and shallow blind holes with room for swarf; in a tight blind hole the chips have nowhere to go.
4) Carbon steel or high speed steel tap, which should I buy for threading electrical boxes and strut?
The 3816GT is carbon steel. Carbon steel taps cut fine in mild steel, sheet steel enclosures, strut and aluminum at hand or low machine speeds, and they are the normal choice for occasional field work on an electrical job. They lose their edge faster at high speed and in hard or stainless material, where high speed steel holds up better. If you are threading stainless or running production volume, go HSS.
5) How many taps come in the Metallics 3816GT pack?
One tap, supplied in a pouch. If you are stocking a van or a shop board and want a taper, plug and bottoming set in 3/8-16, you will need to order the other styles separately.
