Metallics 71620CTT – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What thread size does the Metallics 71620CTT tap cut?
It cuts a 7/16-20 thread, which is the UNF (fine) pitch for 7/16 inch, not the 7/16-14 coarse size. If the hole has to accept a fine-thread 7/16 bolt or a fine-thread rod hanger, this is the right tap; a 7/16-14 fastener will not thread into it.
2) What size hole do I drill before tapping 7/16-20?
25/64 inch is the standard tap drill for a 7/16-20 thread, giving about 75 percent thread depth. Going larger loses holding power in the thread; going smaller loads the tap and risks snapping it, which matters with a carbon steel tap.
3) What is a taper tap used for versus a plug or bottoming tap?
A taper tap is chamfered back over roughly eight to nine threads, so it eases into the hole and self-aligns. That makes it the one you start a thread with, and it works through holes fine. What it won't do is cut a full thread to the bottom of a blind hole, because the long lead leaves several incomplete threads at the end. For blind holes, start with the taper and finish with a plug or bottoming tap in the same 7/16-20 size.
4) Is a carbon steel tap good enough for electrical work, or do I need high speed steel?
Carbon steel is what the 71620CTT is made from, and it handles the work an electrician usually does with a hand tap: chasing or cutting threads in mild steel strut, channel, outlet boxes, and rod. It runs cooler and takes a keen edge, but it softens at lower temperature than high speed steel, so keep it hand driven and lubricated rather than spinning it in a drill. For production tapping or harder material such as stainless, step up to HSS.
5) How many taps come in the Metallics 71620CTT pack?
One tap, packed in a pouch. It is a single-piece item, so if you want a full taper, plug and bottoming progression in 7/16-20 you order them separately.
6) Can I use the 7/16-20 taper tap to clean up damaged threads on an existing bolt hole?
Yes, as long as the existing hole really is 7/16-20. The long chamfer on a taper tap makes it the easiest type to pick up damaged threads without cross-threading. Back it out every half turn to clear chips and use cutting oil; a carbon steel tap will break if you force it through a galled or rusted hole. Note it is a cutting tap, not a thread-restoring file, so it will remove metal.
7) What size tap wrench fits the Metallics 7/16-20 tap?
7/16 inch hand taps use a square drive shank, so any adjustable T-handle or bar-type tap wrench rated to cover roughly 1/4 inch through 1/2 inch taps will hold it. The wrench is not included; the 71620CTT ships as the tap alone.
