1) Will a Carlon E996 PVC box adapter fit a standard 3/4 inch knockout in a panel or junction box?
Yes. The Carlon E996 box adapter is sized to trade size, so the 3/4 inch version (E996E) goes through a standard 3/4 inch knockout. You insert the adapter through the knockout from outside and secure it on the inside, then the conduit side takes 3/4 inch non-metallic conduit. Match the trade size of the adapter to the knockout you are filling, not to the box size.
2) Will the E996 box adapter work on a metal panel or only on PVC boxes?
Either. The adapter is designed to land non-metallic conduit on electrical enclosures generally, and it installs through a knockout, which is how a steel panel, a metal junction box and a molded PVC box are all punched. The fitting being non-metallic does not restrict it to non-metallic boxes, it just means the raceway entry itself is plastic.
3) Can I use one Carlon E996 adapter to step down from 1 inch conduit to a 3/4 inch knockout?
No. Each E996 is a single trade size on both ends, so the 1 inch E996F terminates 1 inch conduit into a 1 inch knockout. To land 1 inch conduit on a smaller opening you need a reducing bushing or reducing washers at the box, or you change the conduit size at the fitting before it reaches the enclosure. Ordering a smaller adapter will not make the larger conduit fit it.
4) What trade sizes does the Carlon E996 non-metallic box adapter come in?
Nine trade sizes, 1/2 inch through 4 inch: 1/2 (E996D), 3/4 (E996E), 1 (E996F), 1-1/4 (E996G), 1-1/2 (E996H), 2 (E996J), 2-1/2 (E996K-CAR), 3 (E996L) and 4 inch (E996N). 5) Can I use a PVC box adapter instead of a male terminal adapter with a locknut?
They solve the same problem from different directions. The Carlon E996 box adapter is a one-piece PVC fitting that passes through the knockout and terminates non-metallic conduit at the enclosure. A threaded male terminal adapter does the same job but relies on a locknut and threaded engagement, which is what you want when the enclosure hub is tapped or when you need a metal-to-PVC transition. For an untapped knockout in a standard box or panel, the E996 adapter is the simpler part because there is no thread to match.
6) Is the Carlon E996 adapter safe to use in a damp or corrosive area like a parking garage or wash-down room?
The E996 is all non-metallic PVC, gray, so there is nothing in the fitting to rust the way a steel connector does at the box entry, which is usually the first thing to go in a damp environment. That is the main reason spec writers call out PVC raceway systems in garages, water plants and coastal work. The PVC body also keeps the raceway entry non-conductive at the enclosure.
7) Do I need glue to install a Carlon PVC box adapter?
The conduit side of the E996 adapter is a PVC socket, so it is solvent welded to the conduit with PVC cement the same as any other rigid non-metallic conduit joint. The enclosure side needs no cement, it is captured mechanically at the knockout. Budget for solvent cement and a cleaner on the job, they are not supplied with the fitting.
8) What are the large 2-1/2, 3 and 4 inch PVC box adapters used for?

E996K-CAR at 2-1/2 inch, E996L at 3 inch and E996N at 4 inch land large PVC raceway into pull boxes, gutters, panelboards and switchgear enclosures, typically underground feeder runs coming up into equipment.
