1) What size old work box do I need for a single switch or receptacle with two cables coming in?
The Carlon blue PVC 1-gang old work box comes in an 8 cubic inch and a 14 cubic inch version. For a single device fed by two NM cables, the 14 cubic inch box (MPN B114R-UPC) is the one to order; the 8 cubic inch (B108R-UPC) is tight and suits a simple single-cable device drop. Box fill under NEC Article 314 is what decides it, and that is the article this box is listed under.
2) Can I install this Carlon PVC box in an existing drywall wall without opening it up?
That's exactly what it's built for. It mounts with ears and swing clamps, so you cut the opening, drop the box in, and tighten the clamp screws to draw the wings against the back of the drywall while the front ears bear on the face. No stud access and no wall demolition. New work boxes nail to a stud and cannot be used this way.
3) Does the 14 cubic inch Carlon old work box come with cable clamps, or do I have to add connectors?

5) Can I use a PVC old work box with metal-clad or armored cable?
No. The Carlon blue box is listed specifically for non-metallic sheathed cable under Article 314. For MC or AC cable, and anywhere an equipment grounding path has to be carried through the box, you need a metal box with the appropriate connector. Blue PVC on a job site is the visual shorthand for a non-metallic cable box, which is part of why it's color coded.
6) Will a standard switch or duplex receptacle and cover plate fit this 1-gang box?
Yes. It's a 1-gang box, so standard single-device yokes (toggle switch, decorator switch, duplex receptacle) screw straight in and take a standard 1-gang wall plate. One device per box; for two devices side by side in a retrofit you need a 2-gang old work box.
7) Is the Carlon B114R a good choice for standardizing outlet boxes across an apartment building retrofit?
