Centaur PLVPN1G – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Do I need an electrical box behind the Centaur PLVPN1G low voltage plate?
No box is required. The PLVPN1G is a 1-gang non-metallic low voltage plate that mounts over an opening in the wall and gives a finished face where no electrical box is used, which is why it works for both retrofit cut-ins and new structured wiring runs.
2) What size is the Centaur PLVPN1G plate, and will it cover a standard 1-gang cut-in?
It measures 4.125 x 3.125 x 1.5 inches, which is standard 1-gang wall plate footprint, so it covers a typical single-gang opening or old-work bracket cut-in. If your opening is a 2-gang cut, you need a 2-gang plate instead.
3) What kind of cable can run through a 1-gang low voltage wall plate like the Centaur PLVPN1G?
Data, telephone, coaxial and speaker wire all pass through it. It is a pass-through plate for low voltage cabling only, not a device plate for line voltage receptacles or switches.
4) Is the Centaur low voltage plate sold individually or in a box?
It ships as a quantity of 50 plates, model PLVPN1G. That case pack suits an integrator or property maintenance crew trimming out multiple rooms or a whole floor at once rather than a single drop.
5) What color and material is the Centaur PLVPN1G low voltage plate?
White plastic. Non-metallic construction means no grounding consideration and no scratching of the drywall face, and white matches the most common commercial device trim, so it blends with existing plates on surrounding openings. White is the only color offered.
6) Can I use the Centaur PLVPN1G in a commercial building, or is it residential only?
Both. It is used for structured wiring in residential and light commercial work. For heavy commercial or industrial openings where a metal plate or a rated enclosure is specified on the drawing, a plastic pass-through plate is not the right call.
