OATEY 270784 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What pipe size does the Cherne 6 inch Test-Kap plug fit?
The Cherne Test-Kap, Oatey part 270784, is sized for 6 inch nominal pipe (150 mm). It slips over the pipe end and is secured with the stainless steel hose clamp that comes on it, so it caps the outside of the pipe rather than wedging inside the bore.
2) How much head pressure will a 6 inch Test-Kap hold during a DWV test?
Rated to 13 psi (0.9 bar), which is 30 feet (9 m) of water column. That covers a typical three-story stack test; if your column is taller than 30 feet, step down to a lower test point or use a plug rated for more head.
3) Can a Cherne Test-Kap be used on cast iron and copper, or only plastic pipe?
It works on plastic, steel, copper and cast iron. The body is flexible PVC that stretches over the pipe OD, and the clamp does the sealing, so the pipe material doesn't matter as long as the end is 6 inch nominal and reasonably clean and round.
4) Is the Test-Kap an inside plug or does it go over the pipe end?
Over the end. Unlike a mechanical or inflatable plug that expands inside the bore, the Test-Kap is a flexible PVC cap pulled over the outside of the pipe and clamped down. That means you need clear access around the pipe OD, and a stub that sticks out far enough for the clamp band to seat. If the pipe end is buried in a wall or you can only reach the inside of the line, use an expandable mechanical plug instead.
5) Do I need to buy a clamp separately for the Oatey 270784 test cap?
No. The stainless steel hose clamp ships on the cap, so it's ready to install out of the box. Nothing else is required to make up the joint.
6) Is the 6 inch Test-Kap reusable on other jobs?
Yes, it is a flexible PVC cap with a stainless steel clamp, so you loosen the clamp, pull it off and keep it. Nothing on it is consumed by the test. For MRO and plumbing crews stocking test gear, that makes it a repeat-use item rather than a throwaway, provided the PVC isn't cut or torn coming off a rough cast iron edge.
