Klein Tools CL312 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Klein CL312 clamp meter fit around a 1-inch conductor or a service cable?
The jaw opening on the CL312 is 1.12 inches (2.9 cm), so a single conductor up to about an inch across drops in fine. Larger service entrance cable or a bundled set of conductors will not fit the jaw, and you would need a meter with a bigger clamp or a flexible current probe for that.
2) Does the Klein CL312 measure DC amps?
No. The clamp measures AC current only, up to 400A. On the test leads it will read DC microamps up to 200 uA, which is what you need for flame rectification sensors on furnaces, but it will not clamp DC load current on a battery bank or solar string. For that you need a meter with a DC-capable Hall effect clamp.
3) Can I use the CL312 to check a furnace flame sensor microamp signal?
Yes, that is one of the reasons this one is sold as an HVAC meter. It reads DC microamps to 200 uA through the test leads, so you can put it in series with the flame sensor lead and read the rectification current. It also has a DC polarity indicator, so you will know if your leads are reversed.
4) Is the CL312 rated for work in a commercial panel?
It carries a CAT III 600V rating and is CE certified, with Class 2 double insulation. CAT III 600V covers distribution level work such as panelboards, feeders and hardwired equipment at up to 600V. It is not rated CAT IV, so service entrance and utility connection work is outside its rating.
5) Can the CL312 test a run or start capacitor on a condenser unit?
Yes. Capacitance measurement goes up to 4000 uF through the test leads, which covers both run capacitors (typically single digit to around 100 uF) and start capacitors. Discharge the capacitor and disconnect it from the circuit before testing.
6) What temperature range does the CL312 thermocouple cover, and is it enough for HVAC supply and return readings?
The thermocouple probe reads -40 to 1832 degrees F (-40 to 1000 degrees C). That easily covers supply and return air splits, refrigerant line temps and freezer work at the low end, and goes high enough for flue gas and heat exchanger surface checks.
7) What comes in the box with the Klein CL312?
The CL312 ships with a carrying case, test leads and 3 AAA batteries. A thermocouple probe is part of the package for the temperature function. Nothing else is needed to start using it.
8) Do I need to pick a range on the CL312 before taking a reading?
No, it auto-ranges. It also uses true RMS measurement, so readings stay accurate on the distorted waveforms you get from VFD driven motors, ECM blowers and electronic ballasts, where an averaging meter would read low.
9) What are the voltage and resistance limits on the CL312?
Voltage measurement tops out at 600V AC and 600V DC through the leads, and resistance reads to 40 megohms. Frequency covers 10 Hz to 1 MHz, useful for checking VFD output and control signal frequencies. Readings show on a 4000 count backlit LCD.
10) How durable is the CL312 for daily truck and rooftop use?
The housing is ABS and it is built to survive a 3.3 foot (1 m) drop. At 10.1 oz (286 g) and 8.7 x 3.02 x 1.61 inches it fits a tool pouch without much bulk. Auto power off after 15 minutes of non-use keeps the batteries from draining when it gets tossed in a bag switched on.
11) Can I get replacement test leads for the Klein CL312?
Yes. Klein lists replacement parts 69401 and 69410 for the CL312, and compatible accessories under part numbers 69140, 69142, 69144, 69146 and 69409.
