Color-Keyed 54174 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What conductor size does the Color Keyed yellow one-hole lug accept?
It is sized for 250 kcmil copper cable, one conductor per lug. The die color code is yellow, so the crimp die and the lug have to match on that color for a compliant compression. If your feeder is 4/0 or 350 kcmil, this is the wrong barrel size, you need the lug keyed to that conductor.
2) Is this lug suitable for aluminum conductor?
No. The barrel is copper and keyed for copper cable only. Landing aluminum in a copper-only lug creates a dissimilar metal joint that corrodes and loosens. For aluminum feeders use a dual-rated AL9CU compression lug in the same 250 kcmil size and bolt pattern.
3) What is a standard barrel lug and when would I need a long barrel instead?
Standard barrel means a single crimp length barrel, which is what most 600V to 35kV terminations call for and what this 250 kcmil copper lug uses. A long barrel takes two or more crimps and is specified where a spec or utility standard calls for extra pull-out strength, typically substation and transmission work. If your drawing just says compression lug, standard barrel is the normal choice.
4) Is Color Keyed the same thing as Blackburn lugs?
Color Keyed is the sub brand, and the product is labeled Color Keyed / Blackburn. If an existing panel in your building was landed on Blackburn color keyed lugs, this is the same product line, so your crimp dies and your spec sheet references still apply. Country of origin is Mexico.
5) Does the yellow color on this lug mean phase identification?
The yellow is the die key, not a phase marking. It tells you which crimp die to use for 250 kcmil, and crews do use it as a quick visual check that the right lug went on the right conductor. If you need phase identification, mark the cable with tape or heat shrink; the lug is bare copper with no insulating cover.
