Color-Keyed 54870BE – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What conductor size do the Color Keyed 54870BE compression lugs take?
The 54870BE lug is sized for 300 kcmil copper conductor. One lug per conductor termination, and the barrel is crimped onto the cable rather than set with a set screw. If your cable is a different kcmil size, you need a different color code in the Color Keyed line, not this one, since compression lugs are size specific and the die index is tied to the barrel.
2) Will a two-hole 300 kcmil lug bolt to a 1/2 inch stud pad?
Yes. The pad on this Color Keyed lug is drilled for 1/2 inch bolts in a two-hole pattern, so it lands on standard 1/2 inch stud or bus pads. The two-hole arrangement also keeps the lug from rotating under torque, which is why switchgear and substation pads usually call for it over a single-hole tongue.
3) Can I use these copper lugs on a 35 kV medium-voltage termination?
The lug carries a 35 kV voltage rating, so it is suitable for medium-voltage terminations up to that class. It ships with no insulation on the barrel, so the connection has to be insulated in the field with the appropriate tape, tubing or termination kit for the system voltage.
4) Can I put this copper lug on aluminum cable?
No. The 54870BE is a copper-only compression lug. Crimping it onto aluminum conductor mixes metals in the barrel and is outside what the connector is listed for. For aluminum feeders use an aluminum or dual-rated AL9CU compression lug in the matching 300 kcmil size.
5) Why is this lug white, and does the color have to match anything?
White is the Color Keyed die index, not a phase marking. In the Color Keyed system the color on the lug tells you which crimping die and die color to use so the barrel gets compressed correctly. Match the tool die to the white index on this 300 kcmil lug; the color is not tied to conductor phase identification.
6) What is the difference between a long barrel lug and a standard barrel lug?
A long barrel takes two or more crimps along its length instead of one, giving more contact area with the conductor and a lower resistance, higher pull-out connection. Short barrel lugs are fine for general feeder work in tight gutters; long barrel is what you want on high-current or medium-voltage terminations like this 300 kcmil 35 kV lug, where heat rise and mechanical pull matter.
7) Is Color Keyed the same as Blackburn?
They are the same product line. Color Keyed is the sub brand and it is labeled Color Keyed / Blackburn, so a spec or takeoff calling for a Blackburn Color Keyed 300 kcmil two-hole lug is asking for this part, ordered as 54870BE.
