Command Access CL93DEU 15D 626 24V – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Command Access CL93 lock the door if the power drops, or unlock it?
That depends on which fail mode you order. The CL93 comes in fail-safe and fail-secure builds and they behave opposite each other on power loss: fail-safe is electrically locked, so it unlocks when power is removed, and fail-secure is electrically unlocked, so it stays locked when power is removed. Stair towers and egress paths that have to release on a fire alarm take fail-safe. Storerooms, IT closets and anything you want secured through an outage take fail-secure. It is a build option, not a field switch, so pick it on the order.
2) What voltage and current does the Command Access CL93 electrified cylindrical lock draw?
The CL93 runs on 12V or 24V AC or DC with a plus/minus 10 percent tolerance, and you choose the voltage when ordering. Draw is 250mA at 12V or 150mA at 24V, 3 watts either way. A plug-in bridge rectifier is included so it takes AC or DC supply. That 3 watt figure is what you size the power supply against when you are counting how many openings one supply can carry.
3) Does the Command Access CL93 take a small format interchangeable core, and does it ship with one?
It is prepped for SFIC and ships less core. You supply the core, which is how it drops into an existing Best-style master key system without rekeying anything else in the building. For a facility already keyed on SFIC, that means one core order and the opening joins the existing hierarchy. Budget for the core separately when you price the job.
4) How does a storeroom function lock behave, and is it the right function for a controlled door?
Storeroom function is the standard pick for a secured opening: the outside lever is always locked and is released either by the key or, on the CL93, by the access control system energizing the solenoid. The inside lever always retracts the latch for free egress, so the door never traps anyone. There is no way to leave the outside lever unlocked, which is exactly what you want on a stock room, mechanical room or server closet. If you need staff to be able to hold the door unlocked by hand during business hours, storeroom is the wrong function.
5) Do I need a separate request-to-exit device with the CL93, or can I get the switch in the lock?
The REX switch is a build option on the CL93 and you order it either included or not included. With it, the inside lever signals your access control panel when someone leaves, so the panel shuts down the door alarm and logs a valid exit instead of flagging a forced open. Without it you are adding a separate motion sensor or exit push. Any of the four fail-mode and voltage combinations can be had with or without the switch.
6) Will the Command Access CL93 match the Best 93K locks already on my other doors?
It is built on the Best 93K Series platform, so it carries the same lock body family, and it is supplied with the D rose. Lever style is your choice of 14D or 15D trim, and everything is in 626 satin chrome. If your building is already standardized on 93K with a D rose, the CL93 is the electrified opening in that same line rather than a different-looking lock bolted into the run.
7) Can the CL93 stay energized all the time, or does it need to be pulsed?
Continuous duty solenoids, so it can sit energized indefinitely. That matters for fail-safe openings, where the lock is powered for the entire time the door is meant to be secure and only drops out on an alarm or outage. A lock with an intermittent-duty solenoid would overheat in that role. Same reason it handles long unlock cycles on a scheduled-open door without a problem.
8) Is the CL93 heavy enough for a high traffic school or hospital corridor?
Grade 1, heavy duty, commercial rated. That is the top ANSI/BHMA cylindrical grade and the level specified for schools, hospitals, government buildings and other openings that see constant use. Command Access lists it for exactly that work: education, healthcare, retail, industrial and multi-tenant residential access points.
9) Should I use an electrified cylindrical lock or an electric strike for access control on a bored door?
An electrified lock like the CL93 puts the control in the lock itself, so the latch and the lever are one assembly and the frame is left alone. That is the way to go when the frame is aluminum, already prepped, or you cannot cut it, and it is the cleaner answer on a door where you also want the exit signal from the lever through the built-in REX. An electric strike keeps the mechanical lock you already have and modifies the frame instead, which is usually less money but means frame work and a separate REX device. The tradeoff on the lock side is that power has to reach the door leaf, so plan on an electric hinge or a door loop for the transfer.
10) What do I have to specify when ordering a Command Access CL93?
Five things: fail mode (fail-safe or fail-secure), voltage (12V or 24V), REX switch included or not, lever trim (14D or 15D), and finish, which is 626 satin chrome throughout. That is 16 orderable combinations. The core is not one of them, it ships SFIC prepped and less core, so order the core alongside it.
