1) Will the Command Access MLRK1-TEL fit a Tell 9500 exit device, or do I need a different kit?
The MLRK1-TEL is built for three families: the Tell 9500, the Phoenix Hardware Titan 66 Series, and the Philadelphia Hardware 9000 Series. If the device on the door is one of those, this is the right pullback kit. Anything else (Von Duprin, Precision, Detex and so on) needs the kit built for that device, since the motor assembly hooks onto that specific back activating bracket.
2) How much room do I need inside the pushpad rail to install a motorized latch retraction kit?
You need 8-3/4 inches of clear rail length after the pushpad. Measure that before ordering: on short doors or cut-down devices the motor assembly simply will not fit. Beyond that, installation is mechanical, the kit hooks onto the back activating bracket and secures with two screws, and the only drilling is for the wire raceway.
3) What voltage and current does the MLRK1-TEL latch retraction kit draw?
24 to 28 VDC, with two field-switchable current modes. Standard runs 900mA peak and 215mA hold; High Torque runs 2A peak and 250mA hold for doors with heavier seals, closers, or stack pressure. Switching modes is done in the field, so you can size the power supply on the 2A peak figure and still run standard mode day to day.
4) Do I need the REX version of the MLRK1-TEL, or the standard one?
Two versions are sold: standard, and one with a built-in REX (request-to-exit) switch. Take the REX version if the access control panel needs to know the pushpad was pressed, to shunt an alarm or release a mag lock on egress. If the opening is simply being electrified for remote unlock or scheduled dogging with no panel input required, the standard kit is enough. The REX switch is built in, so it is not something you can add later by ordering a part.
5) Will electrifying my exit device with a retraction kit void the fire label on the door?
The MLRK1-TEL maintains all UL listings on the original exit device. Note that motorized latch retraction with electric dogging holds the latch back, which is not permitted on a fire rated opening, so on a fire door the device must not be dogged. On non-rated openings the electric dogging is continuous duty rated and auto re-engages if the push pad is pulled from the dogged position.
6) How far can I run wire from the power supply to a Command Access MLRK1-TEL kit?
Up to 300 feet with 18ga wire. That is what lets you put the power supply in a central closet instead of above each opening, which is usually the deciding factor on a multi-door retrofit in a school or office building.
7) What does the MM4S smart module actually do on a Command Access retraction kit?
It is the control board in the kit, and it gives you on-board diagnostics with audible feedback when there is a power problem or the adjustment is off, plus a 5-second PTS electronic adjustment after the kit is installed.
