1) Do I need to order separate red and green exit signs, or can the letter color be changed in the field?
One sign covers both. The Compass CE Series exit sign has field-selectable red or green letters, so you pick the color at install rather than stocking two part numbers. That matters if you maintain a building where some jurisdictions or existing signage use green and others red, you can standardize on a single item for the whole property.
2) What is the difference between the AC Only and Emergency Backup versions of the Compass CE exit sign?
Two power configurations are offered. AC Only runs on building power with no battery, so the sign goes dark if the circuit drops. The Emergency Backup version carries a Nickel Cadmium battery that keeps the exit panel illuminated for 90 minutes during a power loss. If the sign is on an egress path and is not fed from a generator or central inverter, you want the battery version, because NFPA 101 egress marking has to stay lit when normal power fails.
3) Can this exit sign be used for a single face exit or does it have to be double face?
It is universal, so the same unit does either. The CE Series ships with removable chevrons and snap-together canopy, housing and covers, and the face panel is configured single or double at install. Hang it flush against a wall for single face viewing, or mount it perpendicular or from the ceiling where people approach from both directions.
4) Do I have to order a different exit sign for 277 volt circuits?
No. The CE Series exit sign accepts 120 or 277V AC on the same unit, so you can use one item on the 120V branch circuits in a build-out and the 277V lighting circuits in a commercial or industrial space without splitting the order.
5) Can I run remote emergency lamp heads off this exit sign?
With the remote capacity option, yes. It supports either 4 single CIR/COR remote lamp heads or 2 double CIR/COR remotes off the one sign. That is how you light a stairwell landing or a windowless corridor without adding a separate emergency unit. Remote capacity is an option, not standard on every configuration, so it has to be specified when you order.
6) Does this exit sign test itself, or does my maintenance crew have to do the 30 second and 90 minute tests manually?
Self-test/self-diagnostics is an available option on the CE Series, and it handles the routine testing for you: monthly and annual self-testing for 90 minutes, with fault identification for battery, charger, the integral LED lamps, and connected remotes. Manual test durations of 30 seconds, 15 minutes and 90 minutes are also available when an inspector wants to see it run. For a facilities or MRO buyer with dozens of signs, this is the version that keeps the inspection log from becoming a walk-around job. Order without the option and testing is manual.
7) Can this exit sign go in a parking garage or an unconditioned stairwell where it gets damp?
Damp location use is covered. The CE Series is UL924 Listed for damp location, and the housing is high-impact UL flame-rated thermoplastic with UV protection, which is what keeps it from yellowing or chalking in a daylit stairwell. Damp rated is not the same as wet rated, so it is not for locations subject to direct water spray or driving rain.
8) Will the Compass CE exit sign mount to the ceiling, or is it wall mount only?
Wall or ceiling mount are both supported. The snap-together canopy is what handles the orientation change, so a single item can be used for the flush wall locations and the ceiling-drop locations in the same stairwell or corridor run.
9) What color housing does the Compass CE exit sign come in?
White is the housing color, in high-impact thermoplastic. Compass builds the CE Series housing in white or black, so if you are matching black trim or a dark ceiling grid, ask for the black housing configuration rather than assuming the white unit is the only build.
10) How much power does an LED exit sign like this draw compared to the old incandescent signs I am replacing?
The CE Series illuminates the exit panel with LEDs rather than lamps, which is why it qualifies under CEC Title 20 for exit sign power limits. Practically, that means it can stay energized 24/7 on a stairwell or corridor circuit without the lamp replacement cycle an incandescent or fluorescent sign carries, and the LED elements are what the self-diagnostic option monitors for lamp failure.
