1) Can the Compass outdoor remote head be mounted outside where it gets rained on?
The Compass LED outdoor remote is built for exposed exterior locations and carries a damp location rating, with a UL flame rated thermoplastic housing that stands up to weather. Typical placements are exterior exit doors, stair landings, walkways, loading docks, and parking areas. Seal the wiring connections at install so water cannot track into the housing.
2) Does the Compass LED outdoor remote have its own battery, or does it need a separate emergency unit?
It's a remote head, not a self-contained emergency light. There is no battery inside it. It runs at 3.6V off the battery in a host emergency unit or inverter, so you have to order it against a compatible Compass emergency lighting unit with a 3.6V remote capacity output and enough remote wattage left on that unit to carry the head or heads you add. Wire it back to the host unit per NEC; a standard 120/277V branch circuit will not drive it.
3) Should I order the single head or the double head Compass outdoor remote?
Two versions are offered, single lamp head and double lamp head, both in white. Pick the double where one location has to throw light in two directions, like an exterior door that opens onto a walkway running both ways, or a stair landing covering the tread and the path away from it. The single is the choice for a straight run of path lighting where you're spacing several heads out, and it draws less from the host unit's remote capacity, which matters when you're hanging multiple heads off one emergency unit.
4) Will the Compass outdoor remote head satisfy an inspector for emergency egress lighting?
It's UL924 listed as emergency lighting equipment and is built to NFPA 101 and NFPA 70 requirements, and to OSHA. That covers the head itself. The egress path illumination levels an inspector measures depend on how many heads you place, where, and the runtime of the host emergency unit driving them, so the layout is still yours to get right.
5) How many Compass outdoor remote heads can I run off one emergency unit?
That's set by the host unit, not by the head. Each remote head is a 3.6V load, and the emergency unit you connect to publishes a remote capacity in watts at 3.6V. Add up the heads you want, including the fact that a double head is two lamp loads, and stay inside that unit's remote wattage at its rated runtime. Mixing a 3.6V head onto a 6V or 12V unit is not a swap you can make.
6) Can Compass outdoor remote heads be ceiling mounted, or wall only?
Both. The remote head mounts to a wall or a ceiling, so it works under a soffit or canopy over an exterior door as well as on the face of the wall beside it. Mounting hardware is included with the bracket.
7) What color is the Compass outdoor remote head and can I get it in another finish?
White housing, and that's the only finish offered on the outdoor remote, in both the single head and double head versions. If the exterior spec calls for a dark housing, this isn't the head for it.
