Thomas & Betts ALR-1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the ALR-1 conduit body come with a cover and gasket, or do I order those separately?
The ALR-1 body ships without them. You add either a CV-1 die cast cover or an SCV-1 stamped aluminum cover, plus a GKV-1 composition gasket or a GKN-1 neoprene gasket depending on the environment. If you want the body, cover and gasket together, order it as the D Pak catalog number DALR-1-CG.
2) Can I use this conduit body outdoors or in a wet location?
The ALR-1 is built for weather exposed runs, but only when it is closed up properly. The die cast aluminum body is corrosion resistant and the cover screws are retained stainless steel, and the weather resistant seal depends on fitting one of the gaskets, GKV-1 composition or GKN-1 neoprene, under the cover. A body left with a bare cover and no gasket will not hold that seal.
3) Will the ALR-1 thread onto EMT?
No. The ALR-1 is threaded for rigid metal conduit and IMC. EMT is unthreaded, so you would need a set screw or compression fitting arrangement or a body made for EMT instead.
4) Is there enough room inside an ALR-1 to make a splice, or is it only for pulling wire?
The wiring chamber holds 4.3 cubic inches, which covers a pull point and small splices at that volume. Count your conductors against code fill for 4.3 cubic inches before planning a splice in it; for a straight change of direction with a pull, the smooth throats are the point of the body.
5) What is an LR conduit body used for versus an LB or a T?
An LR body, like the ALR-1, turns the run to the right as you face the cover, with the cover on the side opposite the bend so you can reach in and pull. An LB turns back into a wall, an LL turns left, and a T gives you a third opening for a branch. Pick the letter by which way the conduit has to leave, not by the body size.
6) Do I have to buy the ALR-1 in a box quantity, or can I get one?
It is sold each, but the order multiple is 10, so quantities go up in tens. The inner pack is 10 and the outer carton holds 50.
7) Should I use the die cast CV-1 cover or the stamped aluminum SCV-1 on the ALR-1?
Both fit the ALR-1. The CV-1 is die cast and matches the body for a heavier, more impact tolerant closure in industrial or exposed locations. The SCV-1 is stamped aluminum, a lighter cover for protected interior runs. Pair either one with a gasket, GKN-1 neoprene where water is a factor, GKV-1 composition otherwise.
8) Is the Thomas & Betts ALR-1 RoHS compliant for a government or institutional spec?
