CONFAST SAH383-10 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What size drill bit do I use for a CONFAST SAH hex sleeve anchor?
Match the bit to the anchor diameter. A sleeve anchor is drilled with a carbide bit the same nominal size as the anchor, so a 1/2 inch SAH goes into a 1/2 inch hole, a 3/4 inch into a 3/4 inch hole, and so on across the 5/16, 3/8, 1/2, 5/8 and 3/4 inch diameters CONFAST offers. Drill the hole deeper than the embedment you need so drilling dust has somewhere to go, then tighten the hex nut to expand the sleeve against the concrete.
2) How do I pick the right length sleeve anchor for the thickness of what I'm bolting down?
Take the thickness of the fixture plus the nut and washer, then add the embedment you want in the concrete. The SAH runs from 1-7/8 inches up to 8-1/2 inches, so a thin steel plate on a slab is usually handled by a 3/8 x 1-7/8 or 5/16 x 1-1/2, while bolting through a sill plate, a curb, or a thick bracket is where the 1/2 x 6, 5/8 x 6, 3/4 x 6-1/4 and 3/4 x 8-1/2 sizes come in. Longer anchors of the same diameter do not give more holding power by themselves; they just let you get through a thicker fixture and still reach embedment.
3) Can I use a CONFAST hex sleeve anchor in block or brick, or is it concrete only?
CONFAST lists the SAH as a concrete anchor, for fastening into concrete substrates. That is the substrate the size range and hex torque-driven design are stated for. If your base material is hollow block or brick veneer rather than solid concrete, you are outside what this anchor is specified for and should be looking at an anchor rated for that material.
4) How many anchors come in a box of CONFAST SAH sleeve anchors?
Box count varies by size, and it drops as the anchor gets bigger. The 5/16 inch sizes come 100 to a box, 3/8 x 1-7/8 and 3/8 x 3 come 50, most 1/2 inch sizes come 25 (1/2 x 6 is 15), 5/8 inch runs 10 to 25 depending on length, and every 3/4 inch size is a box of 5. The 3/8 x 3 is also offered in a smaller box of 10 if you only need a handful.
5) Is a zinc plated sleeve anchor OK outdoors or in a wet area?
The SAH is zinc plated steel, which is a corrosion resistant finish suited to general interior and protected exterior work. Zinc plating is not the same as hot dip galvanizing or stainless, so for constant wetting, coastal exposure, pool decks, or chemical environments you want a stainless anchor instead. For dry interior slabs, equipment bases, and normal commercial construction, the zinc plated version is the standard choice.
6) Should I use a sleeve anchor or a wedge anchor for mounting to a concrete slab?
A sleeve anchor like the CONFAST SAH expands along a longer sleeve, which spreads the load and makes it more forgiving in older or lower strength concrete and in holes that came out slightly oversize. A wedge anchor expands only at the tip and is generally the pick for structural anchoring into sound, solid poured concrete. The SAH also has a hex head with a nut and washer, so it can be backed off and the fixture removed, which a wedge anchor does not do as cleanly.
7) Do I need to buy nuts and washers separately for the CONFAST SAH?
No. The hex sleeve anchor ships as a complete assembly, hex nut and washer already on the threaded stud over the expansion sleeve. You drill, drop it through the fixture into the hole, and tighten the nut to set it. Nothing else is required beyond a carbide bit matched to the anchor diameter and a wrench or socket.
8) Is the CONFAST SAH sleeve anchor removable if I have to take the fixture back off?
You can back the nut off and lift the fixture away, but the sleeve stays expanded in the hole. The anchor body is not meant to come back out of the concrete. If you plan to remove and reinstall equipment repeatedly, plan on the anchor staying put and reusing the same threads, or specify a different anchor type from the start.
