That is exactly the prep it is built for. The ML2053 is a 2-3/4 inch backset mortise lock for 1-3/4 inch (44mm) doors as standard, with optional thicknesses available for thicker doors. The lockcase measures 5-7/8 x 4 x 15/16 inches, so the mortise pocket has to accept that case. If your existing door is already cut for a standard ANSI mortise lock at 2-3/4 backset, this drops into that pocket.
