Corbin Russwin ML2067-LWA-626 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Corbin Russwin ML2024 mortise lock fit a 1-3/4 inch door with a 2-3/4 inch backset?
Yes. The ML2000 Series mortise lock is built for 1-3/4 inch (44mm) doors as standard, with optional thicknesses available, and runs a 2-3/4 inch (70mm) backset, which is the standard commercial mortise backset. The lockcase itself is heavy-gauge steel at 5-7/8 x 4 x 15/16 inches, so the door needs a mortise pocket cut to that case size before anything else matters.
2) Do I have to order the ML2024 mortise lock handed, or can I re-hand it in the field?
Order it either way and re-hand it on site. The ML2000 Series uses Corbin Russwin's patented Quick Reversible latchbolt, so the handing flips without disassembling the lock case, and the lock is listed as field reversible. That matters if you are stocking a truck or standardizing a building where some openings swing the other way.
3) Will the ML2024 latch into the strike that is already in my frame?
It depends on what is prepped. The latchbolt is a two-piece anti-friction unit measuring 5/8 x 1 inch with a 3/4 inch (19mm) throw, backed by a deadlocking auxiliary latch at 9/16 inch (14mm) effective throw, and the deadbolt is one-piece stainless at 19/32 x 1-1/4 inch with a full 1 inch (25mm) throw. The supplied strike is an ANSI straight lip, 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inch with 1-1/8 inch lip to center. If your frame already carries an ANSI 4-7/8 inch strike prep, it drops in. If the frame has a T-strike or a non-ANSI prep, the frame needs work or a different strike.
4) Can I use my building's existing Corbin Russwin keys with this mortise lock, or order it without a cylinder?
Both are covered. The ML2000 Series works with new or existing Corbin Russwin key systems and accepts most other manufacturers' cylinders, so a locksmith can drop in the keyway already running in the building. The supplied cylinder is brass, 6-pin L4 keyway, 0-bitted as standard, which means it ships uncut for you to key on site. If you are keying to an existing system with your own cylinders, order the Less Cylinder option instead of Standard.
5) What is the difference between the Entrance, Apartment and Dormitory functions on this Corbin Russwin mortise lock?
Those are the three lock functions offered on the 626 Satin Chrome ML2024 with the LW-Lustra lever, and the choice is about who can lock what from where. All three are single cylinder with a 1 inch stainless deadbolt, so the outside takes a key and the inside takes a thumbturn. Entrance is the general commercial office and tenant-door choice. Apartment is the multi-family configuration. Dormitory suits student housing and similar rooms. Pick the function on the order form; the lockbody and trim are otherwise the same across all three.
6) Is this Corbin Russwin mortise lock approved for a 3-hour fire rated door?
Yes. The ML2000 Series is UL and cUL listed to UL10C positive pressure, good for a 3-hour fire door up to 4 x 10 feet single or 8 x 10 feet pair. It also carries ANSI/BHMA A156.13 Series 1000 Grade 1 for both operational and security grade, ADA A117.1, California State Fire Marshal, and windstorm/hurricane certification. For a facility spec sheet, that combination covers most institutional and government submittal requirements in one part.
7) Should I choose the A rose or the M escutcheon trim on the ML2024?
Rose or escutcheon is mostly an aesthetic and coverage decision. The A rose is a 2-1/4 inch diameter round trim, giving you separate rings around the lever, the cylinder and the thumbturn. The M escutcheon is a single plate covering the whole assembly, which hides an older door's prep scars and reads as a heavier commercial look. Both are offered with the LW-Lustra lever in 626 Satin Chrome and on all three functions. Trim is thru-bolted for alignment and added security either way.
8) Is a mortise lock like this worth it over a cylindrical lever lock for a high traffic commercial door?
For a door that gets hit all day, the mortise body is the stronger answer. The ML2000 Series lockcase is heavy-gauge steel set into a machined pocket in the door edge rather than through a bored hole, it carries a separate 1 inch stainless deadbolt on top of the latch, and it has been UL cycle tested to 14.5 million cycles. A cylindrical lock is cheaper to install and fine on a low-traffic interior opening, but it has no independent deadbolt and the door prep is a bore, not a pocket. If the door is already bored for a cylindrical lock, converting it to mortise means a new door or a conversion, so check the existing prep before you spec.
9) How much room does the ML2024 need between the lever and the cylinder on the door face?
Center to center from the knob or lever to the cylinder is 3-5/8 inches (92mm), and lever to thumbturn is 2-7/16 inches (62mm). The armored front is 8 x 1-1/4 inches in wrought brass, bronze or stainless steel. Those are the numbers to check against an existing door prep or a template before you cut, particularly on a narrow stile or a door with a vision light close to the lock edge.
10) Can I standardize a whole building on the ML2000 Series and still get different lock functions per door?
That is what the series is built for. One ML2054 lockbody covers 12 configurable functions, so a facility can carry a single lockbody on the shelf and set the function at the opening. Across doors you keep the same 2-3/4 inch backset, the same ANSI strike prep and the same trim family, which means one door prep template and one finish across offices, apartments and dorm rooms. Corbin Russwin also offers status indicator trim for locked/unlocked visibility on sectional and escutcheon trim, and a vandal resistant ML2000VR option with stainless escutcheons and Torx pin tamper-resistant screws for higher-risk areas.
11) Does the ML2024 mortise lock come with a strike, and what else do I need to order to finish the door?
The lock is supplied with an ANSI straight lip strike, 4-7/8 x 1-1/4 inches with 1-1/8 inch lip to center, in wrought brass, bronze or stainless steel, plus the armored front and the thru-bolted LW-Lustra lever trim in your choice of A rose or M escutcheon. The cylinder comes with the Standard model as a brass 6-pin L4 keyway, 0-bitted, so it still needs cutting to your key system. Choose the Less Cylinder model if you are supplying your own. What is not part of this lock: the door mortise pocket itself, and any frame modification if the existing prep is not ANSI.
12) Does the 626 Satin Chrome finish on this lock match the rest of my commercial door hardware?
626 Satin Chrome is the standard satin chrome commercial finish and pairs with the satin stainless and satin chrome closers, exit devices and pulls found on most institutional openings. Every configuration of the ML2024 with the LW-Lustra lever is supplied in 626, across all three functions and both trim styles, so a mixed order of Entrance, Apartment and Dormitory doors comes out matching.
