1) Can I use this Crouse-Hinds screw-in connector on liquidtight flex or in a wet location?
No. The 770DC and 772DC are for standard FMC in ordinary, non-hazardous locations only, with no sealing gland. For liquidtight flexible conduit you need a liquidtight fitting such as the RACO 4734 SWIVEL-LOK Type B multi-position connector in 1 inch nylon.
2) I am running liquidtight, not flexible metal conduit. Can I use the Crouse-Hinds 770DC?
No. The 770DC is built for FMC (flexible metal conduit) with a screw-in body and is rated for ordinary, non-hazardous locations. For liquidtight, use a fitting built for it, such as the RACO 4734 SWIVEL-LOK, a 1-inch Type B liquidtight multi-position connector in nylon. The two are not interchangeable at the conduit end.
3) Does a non-insulated FMC connector still give me a ground path?
Yes. Being non-insulated, the zinc die cast body makes direct metal-to-metal contact for continuity between the flex and the enclosure, which is what you want where the metal raceway is part of the bonding path. The trade-off is a bare metal throat, so if the conductors are large or the insulation is thin, an insulated-throat fitting is the better choice.
4) What is the difference between a screw-in FMC connector and a squeeze or clamp type?
A screw-in fitting like the 770DC threads into the spiral of the flexible metal conduit, so there is no clamp screw to tighten and nothing to lose in a tight ceiling space. Squeeze and saddle types grip the outside of the flex instead and are easier to reposition. Both land in the same knockout; the screw-in is faster on straight terminations, which is all this connector does, since it is a straight body with no angle.
5) Do these Crouse-Hinds FMC connectors meet code for an inspected job?
The 770DC and 772DC are built to NEC and CEC standards, so they suit inspected work on either side of the border, provided they are used as intended: FMC only, straight terminations, ordinary non-hazardous locations.
6) Is anything else needed to land this fitting in a box?
Just the locknut on the inside of the enclosure for the male thread; the fitting itself threads directly into the flex, so no clamp hardware or separate bushing is involved on a non-insulated straight connector like this. Order the locknut in the matching trade size, 3/8 inch for the 770DC or 3/4 inch for the 772DC.
7) What looks like a substitute for the Crouse-Hinds 770DC connector but will not work?
The word connector covers several unrelated parts. The Leviton 8319-C is a hospital grade NEMA 5-20R cord connector, a female receptacle body for a plug, not a conduit fitting. The Leviton ML2-C is a midget wire connector for splicing conductors. The Burndy KVS34 is a 2-bolt copper run and tap splice connector. None of these terminate FMC at an enclosure knockout the way the 770DC does.
8) Is there an option that includes the box instead of just the FMC connector?
The Crouse-Hinds 770DC is a fitting alone, sold in 3/8-inch and 3/4-inch sizes for FMC terminations. If you want the enclosure with the cable connector already integrated, the RACO 232MSCM is a 4 inch square welded box, 2-1/8 inch deep, with a STAB-IT connector and an M bracket. That covers box, bracket and connection in one piece rather than a separate fitting at a knockout.
9) The Crouse-Hinds 770DC is non-insulated. What does that mean when I compare it to other FMC connectors?
Non-insulated means there is no throat liner, so the connector gives direct metal continuity for grounding and bonding paths and the conductors bear on the fitting throat. The Thomas & Betts 306 Tite-Bite is likewise a non-insulated straight FMC connector, so it carries the same consideration. If your inspector or spec calls for an insulated throat, neither of these two answers that call.
10) I need to bond intersystem grounds at the service, not terminate conduit. Is the Crouse-Hinds 770DC the right part?
No. The 770DC is a zinc die cast FMC conduit connector meeting NEC/CEC standards for ordinary locations. For intersystem bonding at the service, the Burndy BDTIBB BONDIT is the purpose-built piece: a wall mount intersystem bonding connector in stainless steel accepting #14 through #2 AWG. Different task, different listing.
11) Will zinc die cast hold up in a commercial or light industrial install?
