1) What wire sizes will the NSi SC-4 compression splice accept?
The SC-4 is built for 4 AWG copper, with an expanded range covering 4 AWG through 6 AWG. That means one part number handles both sizes, so a 6 AWG tap into a 4 AWG run can be spliced with the same connector. It accepts Class B and Class C stranding. Barrel inside diameter is 0.25 inch, outside 0.34 inch, so the conductor has to strip down into that bore cleanly.
2) Which crimp die do I use on an NSi SC-4 splice?
Gray is the die color code on the SC-4, and each splice carries a die index mark on the barrel along with serrations showing where the crimps go. Match the gray index on your compression tool die set and crimp at the serration locations. The 1 inch short barrel typically takes crimps on both sides of center.
3) Can I use this copper splice on a 15kV or 35kV underground cable?
Yes, with a condition. The SC-4 is listed for use up to 35kV only when installed per the cable manufacturer's voltage stress relief instructions, meaning the splice has to be properly taped or jacketed with a stress relief/insulating system. Left bare, the maximum is 5kV. Its own voltage rating as a connector is 600V.

The SC-4 is a splice, a two-ended compression barrel for joining conductor to conductor. It has no tongue or tang, so it will not bolt to a bus bar, ground bar or breaker pad. For landing 4 AWG copper on a bus you need a one-hole or two-hole compression lug with the appropriate bolt hole size instead.
6) Will a tinned copper compression splice hold up in a wet or underground vault?
The barrel is high conductivity copper tubing with a tin-plated finish specifically for corrosion resistance, which is why it gets specified for underground and distribution cable splicing. It is a copper-only connector though, rated 9CU, so it is not for aluminum conductors or aluminum-to-copper transitions.
7) What temperature can this compression splice run at?
90C (194F) is the rating on the SC-4, with a 9CU conductor rating, so it matches 90C-rated copper building wire like THHN or XHHW without derating the connector. Hotter than 90C conductor insulation is out of scope.
8) Short barrel vs long barrel splice: which should I order?
The SC-4 is the short barrel version, 1 inch of barrel overall. Short barrel takes fewer crimps and fits tight gutters, pull boxes and vaults where there is not much straight conductor to work with. A long barrel splice gives more crimp area and is what you reach for when the specification calls for additional crimps per side or on high-vibration feeder runs. If the spec sheet on the job just says compression splice for 4 AWG copper, short barrel is the standard choice.
9) Does the NSi SC-4 have an inspection peep hole to verify conductor insertion?
No peep hole on the SC-4, and no slotted tang either, since it is a straight butt splice rather than a terminal lug. Without a peep hole you have to measure your strip length against the 1 inch barrel and bottom the conductor to the internal stop before crimping.
