1) Will a Hi-Line flanged tailpiece work with my sink strainer?
Hi-Line means the top end is flanged rather than threaded, so it seats under the strainer body and is held by a slip joint nut and washer. That's the standard arrangement for a kitchen or bar sink basket strainer. If your strainer takes a threaded tailpiece that screws directly into the strainer body, this flanged version is the wrong style.
2) Does this tailpiece fit 1-1/2 inch slip joint traps?
Yes. The body is 1-1/2 inch, which mates with standard 1-1/2 inch slip joint P-traps and trap adapters. Do not use it on a 1-1/4 inch lavatory trap.
3) Can I connect my dishwasher drain hose to the 3/4 inch branch on the AP9819?
The branch is 3/4 inch and threaded, which is the common size for a dishwasher or air gap connection using a threaded hose adapter or barbed nipple. The hose does not slip straight onto it; you thread an adapter on first.
4) Is 8 inches long enough, or should I get a longer tailpiece?
The AP9819 gives you 8 inches of drop below the strainer before the trap. On a standard sink with the trap close under the basin that's plenty, and you can always trim a poly tailpiece from the bottom. If your trap sits low in a deep base cabinet you'll need a longer piece or a tailpiece extension rather than stretching this one.
5) Does the AP9819 come with the nut and washer, or do I buy those separately?
Slip joint nut and washer are part of the connection as supplied. Oatey also offers these tailpieces with a True Blue premium washer for a better seal, and in a 1/2 inch branch version if 3/4 inch is larger than you need.
6) Is the Oatey AP9819 plastic or metal, and will it hold up in a commercial kitchen?
Polypropylene, in black. Poly resists the caustic drain cleaners and hot water that eat chrome-plated brass tubular from the inside, which is why maintenance crews standardize on it under sinks. The tradeoff is appearance, so for an exposed pedestal or vanity run most people still spec chrome.
7) Can I use this tailpiece with plastic pipe under the sink?
Yes, it's rated for use with soft plastic pipe, so it joins to PP or PVC tubular drain components at the slip joint. Snug the nuts by hand plus a light turn; over-tightening on poly deforms the washer and starts a weep.
