The PP9816 is a 1-1/2 inch tube with a slip joint top that takes a slip nut and washer at the strainer, and the plain 1-1/2 inch bottom end slides into the trap's slip nut. No glue, no threads on the main run.

For 1-1/2 inch slip joint kitchen drains with no disposer, the PP9816 is the standard part: 8 inch white polypropylene tube, slip joint top, 1/2 inch threaded side branch at 2 inches from center. Where a disposer is installed the dishwasher normally lands on the disposer inlet instead and no branch tailpiece is needed, so check which sinks in the building have disposers before buying in quantity.

The branch sits 2 inches from center, so on the 8 inch tube you have room above and below it for the strainer nut and the trap. Polypropylene tailpieces are trimmed from the plain bottom end to suit the trap height; do not cut above the branch or you lose the slip joint top.

The branch is 1/2 inch and threaded, so it takes a threaded adapter or fitting rather than a slip nut. For a dishwasher you would thread on the appropriate hose adapter and clamp the hose to it. If you need the larger inlet instead, Dearborn makes the same tailpiece with a 3/4 inch branch.

The PP9816 is white polypropylene. Dearborn offers the branch tailpiece in white or black; it is purely appearance, since both are the same plastic. White is the usual pick under a residential sink, black where the underside is exposed on darker cabinetry or in commercial work.
