OATEY 820A-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Will the Oatey Dearborn 820A-1 extension tube thread onto a standard 1-1/4 inch lavatory tailpiece and P-trap?
Yes. The Dearborn 820A-1 is a 1-1/4 inch extension tube threaded on both ends, so it threads directly between a 1-1/4 inch lavatory sink waste outlet and the 1-1/4 inch inlet of the trap. It adds 8 inches of reach when the sink outlet sits too high above the trap arm. No slip nut or compression joint is involved on either end, the joints are threaded.
2) Can I use a Dearborn 820A-1 extension tube on a pressurized supply line?
No. The 820A-1 is a drain-side waste fitting with a maximum working pressure of 15 psi. It belongs between the lavatory waste outlet and the trap, downstream of everything. For water supply you need a rated supply tube or riser, not this tube.
3) What is the 820A-1 made of, and does the chrome hold up on an exposed ADA lavatory?
Brass tube with a chrome plated finish, 20 gauge wall. Because it's brass rather than plastic, it's the right choice where the drain is exposed under a wall-hung or barrier-free lavatory and gets seen and bumped. The 820A-1 weighs 0.28 lb. Unfinished brass is also offered in the Dearborn extension tube range if you're matching an unplated trap.
4) My lavatory tailpiece is too short to reach the trap, do I need a longer tailpiece or an extension tube?
An extension tube is the simpler fix when the existing tailpiece threads are sound. The Dearborn 820A-1 threads onto what is already there and gains 8 inches, so you don't have to pull the sink strainer or basket to swap a tailpiece. Dearborn offers this extension tube in other lengths as well, so pick the length that closes your gap without forcing the trap arm off level.
