OATEY 828-1 – Frequently Asked Questions
1) Can I use this brass extension tube on a pressurized water line?
No. The 828-1 is a drain-side tubular fitting with a maximum working pressure of 15 psi. It belongs on the waste side of a lavatory only. For supply lines use a rated water supply fitting, never a tubular extension tube.
2) My sink drain is too short to reach the trap. Is this the right part, or do I need a longer tube?
An extension tube is the right part for closing that gap, and the 828-1 adds 6 inches of 1-1/2 inch tube between the sink waste and the drain connection. Dearborn makes the same threaded-both-ends tube in other lengths, so if you need more than 6 inches of reach, order the longer length rather than stacking two tubes.
3) What is the 828-1 extension tube made of, and will the chrome match my exposed trap under a pedestal sink?
Brass tube with a chrome plated finish, so it matches the chrome tubular traps and tailpieces normally used where the drain is visible under a pedestal or wall-hung lavatory. The same part is offered in unfinished brass if the job calls for raw brass instead.
4) What does 20 gauge mean on this Dearborn extension tube, and is it heavy enough for commercial restrooms?
20 gauge describes the wall thickness of the brass tube. It is the heavier-wall tubular option compared with thin-wall 22 gauge commonly used in residential work, which is why 20 gauge brass is the usual pick for commercial and institutional lavatory waste where the exposed tube gets bumped and cleaned. The 828-1 is 20 gauge brass, chrome plated.
5) Do I get washers and nuts with the Oatey 828-1, or do I need to order them separately?
The 828-1 is the extension tube itself, threaded on both ends. Nuts and washers are not described as part of it, so plan on having the slip nuts and gaskets for your trap connection on hand. The threaded ends are what makes the joints quick to make up without additional adapters.
