OATEY 720-1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Is the Oatey Dearborn 720-1 an S-trap or a P-trap, and where does it get used?
The Dearborn 720-1 is a 1-1/2 inch S-trap, meaning the outlet turns back down into a floor drain line rather than out through the wall. Use it where the waste stub comes up out of the floor under a sink or lavatory. If the drain leaves through the wall behind the fixture, you want a P-trap instead, not this one. Many jurisdictions restrict S-traps on new work, so this is most often bought as a replacement for an existing S-trap installation.
2) What size drain pipe does the Dearborn 720-1 trap connect to?
It is built for 1-1/2 inch tubular drain, which is the standard size for a kitchen sink or a commercial lavatory tailpiece. Both ends are slip joint, so it slides over 1-1/2 inch tube and seals with a washer and nut rather than threading or soldering.
3) Is the Oatey 720-1 S-trap brass or plastic?
Brass tube with a chrome-plated finish, in 20 gauge wall. That is the exposed-trap spec, for under a wall-hung lavatory or any sink where the trap is visible and a white plastic trap would look wrong. Plastic tubular traps cost less but are not comparable on appearance or on durability under repeated service.
4) Does the 720-1 trap come with an escutcheon or do I order that separately?
A flange is included with the Dearborn 720-1, so the hole where the trap arm passes through the floor or wall covers off without a separate escutcheon purchase. Slip nuts and washers are part of the slip joint connections on the trap ends.
5) Will a 20 gauge chrome trap hold up in a commercial restroom?
20 gauge is the lighter of the common brass tubular wall thicknesses. For a residential unit, an office restroom, or a light-traffic lavatory it is the usual choice. On high-abuse openings, schools, stadiums, or anywhere the trap gets kicked or gets frequent snaking, buyers typically step up to a 17 gauge brass trap instead. The brass body itself resists corrosion far better than a plated steel part.
6) Can I install the Oatey 720-1 without soldering or threading the drain?
No soldering and no pipe dope needed. Both connections are slip joint, so the trap slides onto the tailpiece and the floor stub and tightens with slip nuts by hand plus a quarter turn. That also means it comes apart for cleaning without cutting anything, which is why it is a standard MRO stock item.
7) What is the part number and weight on the Dearborn 1-1/2 inch S-trap?
Order it as Oatey Dearborn 720-1. It weighs 1.884 pounds, which is what you would expect from a chrome-plated brass tubular trap in this size and tells you it is a metal trap and not a plated plastic lookalike.
