OATEY 714A-1 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Does the Oatey Dearborn 714A-1 P-trap come with the nuts and washers, or do I need to buy them separately?
The 714A-1 ships with 2 rubber slip joint washers and 2 zinc nuts, so the slip joint connections are ready to make up out of the box. You will still need a tailpiece from the drain and a trap arm or wall tube to reach the drain stub, since neither is part of the trap.
2) Is the Dearborn 714A-1 a real brass trap or a plastic one with a chrome look?
It is brass tube, 17 gauge, with a chrome finish over it. That is the heavier commercial spec compared with the thinner 20 and 22 gauge chrome traps sold for residential lavatories, and it is why this one gets specified where the trap is exposed under a wall hung sink and has to take abuse.
3) What does "low inlet" mean on a chrome P-trap, and when do I need it instead of a standard one?
Low inlet means the inlet leg of the trap is shorter than on a standard P-trap. You use it when the drain stub in the wall sits high relative to the sink outlet and a standard trap would not drop far enough to line up, or under a shallow basin where there is little vertical room between the strainer and the wall opening. If you have plenty of drop below the sink, a standard inlet 1-1/2 inch trap is the usual choice.
4) Will the 714A-1 connect to my existing 1-1/2 inch chrome tailpiece and wall tube?
Yes, provided your tubing is 1-1/2 inch. Both ends of the 714A-1 are slip joint, so it slides over standard 1-1/2 inch tailpiece and trap arm tubing and seals with the supplied rubber washers under the zinc nuts. No threading or soldering. If your sink drain is 1-1/4 inch (common on older lavatories), this trap will not fit without a reducing adapter.
5) Does the Dearborn 714A-1 P-trap include an escutcheon for the wall penetration?
A flange is part of the 714A-1, so the wall opening around the trap arm gets covered without sourcing a separate escutcheon. That matters on exposed installs where a raw hole in the finished wall is not acceptable.
6) I manage a building with exposed chrome traps under the lavatories. Will this match the others?
If the existing traps are 1-1/2 inch chrome plated brass, the 714A-1 matches visually and connects the same way, since it is chrome over brass with slip joint ends. The one thing to check before you standardize on it is inlet height: this is the low inlet version, so it has a shorter inlet leg than a standard P-trap and will sit differently if the rest of the building is on standard inlets.
7) Can I use the 714A-1 chrome P-trap on a kitchen sink or a garbage disposal?
It is a 1-1/2 inch trap, which is the right size for a kitchen drain, but a polished chrome 17 gauge brass trap is meant for exposed lavatory and commercial fixture work where it is seen. Inside a kitchen cabinet most installers run tubular PVC instead, because it costs less and the slip joints tolerate repeated disassembly better. If the kitchen trap is exposed on an open leg sink, the chrome version is the one you want.
8) What is the exact manufacturer part number for the Dearborn low inlet 1-1/2 inch chrome P-trap?
Oatey Dearborn part number 714A-1. When ordering, the details that separate it from the adjacent Dearborn traps are the 1-1/2 inch size, the low inlet configuration, 17 gauge brass tube, and the chrome finish. Nuts and washers are included.
9) How much does the Oatey 714A-1 P-trap weigh for a parts truck or MRO stock order?
About 1.29 lb each. It takes up roughly 0.072 cubic feet, so a case of them stocks in a small bin on a service van without eating shelf space.
