1) Will the Oatey Dearborn 711A-1 P-trap connect to 1-1/4 inch lavatory tailpiece and drain pipe?
Yes. The 711A-1 is a 1-1/4 inch P-trap with slip joint connections on both ends, so it slides onto standard 1-1/4 inch lavatory tubular tailpiece and 1-1/4 inch trap arm without soldering or glue. The slip nuts tighten over rubber washers, so pipe insertion depth can be adjusted to take up minor height differences.
2) Is the Dearborn 711A-1 brass or plastic, and how thick is the wall?
It is brass tubular, 17 gauge, chrome plated. Seventeen gauge is the heavier of the two common tubular wall thicknesses and is what commercial and institutional specs usually call for over thin-wall 22 gauge; it resists crushing when the slip nuts are pulled up tight and holds threads better on repeated service calls. Plastic traps are cheaper but will not meet a spec that calls for chrome-plated brass.
3) Does the 711A-1 P-trap come with the nuts and washers, or do I have to buy them separately?
Two rubber washers and two zinc slip nuts ship with the trap, so the trap-to-tailpiece and trap-to-trap-arm joints are covered out of the box. What is not included is the tailpiece itself and, if the wall arm needs it, a trap adapter. For an exposed installation at a wall-hung sink you will also want an escutcheon to cover the wall penetration.
4) Can I use the Oatey 711A-1 on a kitchen sink drain?
Not usually. Kitchen sinks are 1-1/2 inch drain, and the 711A-1 is sized 1-1/4 inch, which is the lavatory and bathroom sink size. Use it for bathroom basins; for a kitchen sink, order a 1-1/2 inch P-trap instead.
5) What does "low inlet" mean on a P-trap, and when do I need one?
Low inlet means the trap's inlet sits lower relative to the outlet than on a standard P-trap, which buys vertical clearance under the fixture. It is the one to use when the sink drain outlet is close to the wall drain opening, a common problem on wall-hung lavatories, ADA-height sinks, and shallow vanity cabinets where a standard trap would not leave enough tailpiece to make the joint. If you have plenty of room below the basin, a standard inlet trap works fine.
6) Is this trap finished for exposed use under a wall-hung sink, or is it meant to be hidden in a cabinet?
Chrome plated over brass, with a flange, so it is made to be seen. That makes it appropriate for wall-hung lavatories, school and restroom fixtures, and pedestal sinks where the trap is in view. It works equally well inside a vanity, but if nothing is visible a plain plastic trap will do the same job.
