It swaps the visible trim and stopper on an existing bath waste and overflow without removing the rough-in components, so no wall access and no drain line work. 2) Does the Oatey K27SN kit work on a two-hole overflow faceplate tub?
No. The K27SN converts the overflow to a 1-hole faceplate, which is what a lift and turn stopper needs since there is no trip lever. If your tub currently has a trip-lever waste with a two-hole plate, this kit covers that opening pattern only if the rough-in overflow accepts a single-hole plate. For a trip-lever style replacement you want a conversion kit specified with a trip-lever faceplate instead.
3) What does a lift and turn stopper do differently from a trip lever tub waste?
A Uni-Lift stopper seals at the drain itself: you push it down and turn to hold it closed, then turn and lift to drain. There is no linkage running up the overflow tube and no trip lever on the faceplate, which is why the K27SN uses a single-hole overflow plate. Trip-lever wastes keep the handle at the overflow and a plunger or rocker inside the tube, so they have more moving parts in the wall. For a rental or hotel unit where linkage service calls are the problem, lift and turn removes that linkage entirely.
4) Is the drain spud on this Dearborn conversion kit brass or plastic?
Brass. The K27SN ships with a brass drain spud, and the seal at the tub shoe is made with a foam rubber drain gasket. The kit also includes a 1-1/2 inch bushing, so the spud can be adapted to the thread on the existing waste shoe.
