Delaney Hardware 3V5092 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What backset do I order for a Delaney E Series classroom leverset, and does it matter?
Both 2-3/4 inch and 2-3/8 inch are orderable, and backset is a required selection. 2-3/4 inch is the standard UL latch (E9070T entrance latch) with a 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inch faceplate; the 2-3/8 inch option uses the E9060T latch with a 1 x 2-1/4 inch faceplate. Measure from the door edge to the center of the 2-1/8 inch cross bore on your existing prep and match it, or the lock will not line up.
2) What door prep does this cylindrical lever need?
Standard bored-door prep: 2-1/8 inch cross bore, 1 inch edge bore in the door edge, and a square-corner latch face mortise of 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches at the 2-3/4 inch backset or 1 x 2-1/4 inches at 2-3/8 inch. The frame takes a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike (9109), which ships as standard.
3) How does classroom function work on this Delaney lever, and is it the right function for a classroom door?
The outside lever is locked and unlocked by key only, and once locked it stays locked, so a teacher cannot leave the room unsecured by pushing a button. The deadlocking latch bolt retracts with a key outside or by turning the inside lever, and the inside lever is always unlocked for free egress. If you want staff to be able to lock the door from inside the room during a lockdown, this is not that function; classroom security (lock by key from inside) is a different function.
4) Will this lever latch into the strike already in my frame?
The latch has a 1/2 inch stainless steel throw and comes with a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike (9109). If your frame has the standard 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike cutout, the supplied strike drops straight in. If you are reusing an existing strike, check that the lip projection lets the 1/2 inch bolt seat fully.
5) Can I key this Delaney classroom lever into my existing Schlage or Kwikset keyway?
Yes, keyway is a required selection. SC4 6-pin is standard, with KW1 5-pin and SC1 5-pin also available. Keying is specified separately as keyed different or keyed alike. If you are standardizing a building on Schlage keys, order the SC4 or SC1; for Kwikset-keyed properties, order KW1.
6) Is this Delaney leverset rated for a fire door?
The latch bolt meets a 3-hour fire rating, and the 2-3/4 inch latch is the UL standard latch. The lockset meets and exceeds BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles, and meets Federal Standard FF-H-106C.
7) Which cylindrical lever will fit a 2 inch thick door, the Delaney E Series CT classroom lever or the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20?
The Delaney E Series CT classroom leverset covers 1-3/8 inch through 2 inch doors on an adjustable mounting plate. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 is adjustable from 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, so for a 2 inch door the Delaney E Series CT is the one that covers the thickness.
8) I need keyed control on a classroom door with Schlage keys already in the building - does the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 work?
The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 is a privacy indicator lever with a red/green occupancy indicator, so it is not a keyed lock and cannot be keyed into an existing system. The Delaney E Series CT classroom leverset takes an SC4 6-pin cylinder as standard with KW1 5-pin and SC1 5-pin optional, and is also offered less core for small-format 6-pin interchangeable core, so it is the one that keys into an existing Schlage-keyway system.
9) What is the difference between the standard cylinder and the SFIC version of this leverset?
Two cylinder builds are offered. The standard cylinder version ships keyed in the keyway you specify. The SFIC version takes a small-format 6-pin interchangeable core and ships less core, so you supply and install your own cores from your existing master key system. If you order SFIC, select None on the keyway and keying options.
10) Is Grade 2 enough for a school corridor or apartment common door?
Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles under ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 suits moderate commercial traffic: classrooms, offices, apartment unit and common doors. For a high-abuse entry taking constant traffic, step up to a Grade 1 cylindrical. The CT lever also has a clutch, panic-proof push/turn mechanism, so forcing the locked outside lever spins it free instead of breaking the spindle, which is what usually kills levers in school use.
11) I need a bathroom or single-occupancy door instead of a keyed classroom lock. What should I look at?
A classroom lever is key-operated from outside and is the wrong function for a restroom. For privacy, the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 privacy indicator leverset gives a red/green occupancy indicator and adjusts for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors, and it comes in both 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch backsets so it drops into the same bored prep. Delaney's E Series also builds pass and privacy latches (E9073T at 2-3/4 inch, E9063T at 2-3/8 inch) if you want to stay on one series.
12) Does this lever have handing I need to specify?
No handing selection is required on the E Series CT cylindrical leverset. It uses an independent torsion spring with removable through bolts and concealed mounting screws, and the lever mounts either way on the bored prep. What you do have to specify is backset, keyway, and keying.
13) Is the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 an ANSI Grade 2 substitute for the Delaney E Series CT classroom lever?
No. The Delaney E Series CT is a Grade 2 lockset that meets and exceeds BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 is described as standard duty commercial grade, so if a drawing calls out ANSI Grade 2 cylindrical, the Delaney E Series CT is the one that answers the callout. They also differ in function, classroom versus privacy with indicator.
14) Will the dull chrome finish match the other levers in my building?
The finish is US26D Dull Chrome, the satin chrome standard used on most commercial openings. It reads the same as satin chrome trim and closers already in a typical school or office; it will not match satin nickel (US15) or brushed stainless (630) exactly, so pull a sample against an existing door before committing a large order.
