Delaney Hardware 3M5002 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Delaney E Series MD entrance leverset fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or does it need a 1-3/4 inch door?
Both work. The E Series MD lever mounts on doors from 1-3/8 inches up to 2 inches thanks to an adjustable mounting plate, so it covers the standard 1-3/4 inch commercial door, the older 1-3/8 inch interior door, and thicker doors up to 2 inches without a separate kit. That 2 inch top end is wider than most cylindrical levers reach.
2) Does the Delaney E Series lever drop into an existing 2-1/8 inch bore, and what backset do I order?
It drops into standard cylindrical prep: 2-1/8 inch cross bore and 1 inch edge bore. Backset is a required choice at order time, 2-3/4 inch or 2-3/8 inch, and those are the two backsets you will find in existing doors. The latch faceplate changes with it, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches on the 2-3/4 inch latch and 1 x 2-1/4 inches square corner on the 2-3/8 inch. Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore before you pick.
3) Will the Delaney E Series entrance lever latch into the strike already in my frame?
It ships with a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike (9109), which is the tall commercial strike used in hollow metal frames, and the bolt throws 1/2 inch in stainless steel. If your frame is prepped for a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike, the new lever lines up with it. If your existing openings use a small T-strike or full-lip residential strike in a wood jamb, the frame prep is different and you would be cutting the jamb to take the ANSI strike.
4) Can I get the Delaney E Series lever keyed alike with the rest of my building's Schlage or Kwikset keys?
Keyway is a required selection: SC4 6-pin as standard, or KW1 5-pin or SC1 5-pin. SC1 and SC4 are the Schlage keyways and KW1 is the Kwikset keyway, so a property running one of those key systems can order the lever cut to match rather than adding another key to the ring. Keying is also specified on the order, keyed different or keyed alike, so a group of doors can be set to one key.
5) Is the Delaney E Series MD lever rated for a fire door?
The latch bolt meets a 3-hour fire rating, so the latching hardware itself is qualified for fire door use. The lockset is Grade 2 commercial and meets and exceeds BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles, and it also meets Federal Standard FF-H-106C, which is what a government or institutional spec usually calls out.
6) Can the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 be used in place of a Delaney E Series MD keyed entrance leverset?
No, they do different jobs on the door. The Delaney E Series MD lever is an entrance function, keyed from the outside and locked or unlocked inside with a turn-button, with SC4 6-pin standard and KW1 or SC1 5-pin cylinders available. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 is a privacy function with a red/green occupancy indicator, so it has no key cylinder at all. If the opening needs a key on the outside, the INDLEV-20 will not cover it.
7) What lever should I use on a restroom or single-occupancy room instead of a keyed entrance lever?
For a restroom or other single-occupancy door where staff and visitors need to see at a glance whether the room is in use, the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 is the privacy-function lever, with a red/green occupancy indicator, offered in 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backset. The Delaney E Series MD lever is the entrance function for a door that has to be keyed. Both cover the same two common backsets, so the door prep does not change between them.
8) How does the keyed entry function on the Delaney E Series lever actually work day to day?
The inside pushbutton locks the outside lever. Turning the inside lever or using the key outside pops the button back out automatically, so a tenant cannot lock themselves out by pulling the door shut, and closing the door does not release the button. If you want it to stay locked, turn the button to horizontal and it stays fixed there until released. It is also panic proof push/turn with a clutch, meaning the outside lever spins free when locked instead of transmitting force to the mechanism, which is what saves the lockset from being twisted off.
9) What latch part number comes with the Delaney E Series entrance leverset?
The entrance function ships with the E9070T latch at 2-3/4 inch backset, or the E9060T if you specify 2-3/8 inch. Passage and privacy functions in the same family use E9073T and E9063T instead, so if you are rebuilding a batch of doors and pulling latches from a bin, match the part number to the function as well as the backset.
10) I need a lever for a restroom or a room that needs an occupied indicator, not a keyed entry. What should I use instead?
The Delaney E Series MD is a keyed entrance lock, so it is the wrong function for a restroom. For an occupancy indicator, the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 is a privacy indicator leverset with a red/green occupancy indicator, available in 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch backset and adjustable for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. Note its thickness range stops at 1-3/4 inches, so on a 2 inch door the Delaney is the one that still mounts.
11) Is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever enough for an apartment entry door, or do I need Grade 1?
Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles covers apartment unit entries, offices, and interior commercial doors, which is where this lever is aimed. Where it is not the right call is a high-traffic public entrance, a stairwell, or a school corridor door, all of which see cycle counts that push you to a Grade 1 cylindrical or a mortise lock. The E Series does bring commercial construction to that Grade 2 duty: independent torsion spring so the lever will not sag, removable through bolts, and an anti-friction latch retractor.
12) Does the Delaney E Series MD lever have a handing I need to specify?
No handing to call out. It is a cylindrical bored lock with a clutch push/turn lever, and the required selections at order time are backset, keyway, and keying, nothing else. That makes it easy to stock: one part covers left and right hand doors across a building.
13) Do I need to buy the strike and latch separately for the Delaney E Series lever?
No. The lockset comes with its latch (E9070T for the 2-3/4 inch entrance) and the 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike, plus removable through bolts and concealed mounting screws. What you supply is the door prep if it is not already bored: 2-1/8 inch cross bore, 1 inch edge bore, and the latch face mortise, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches at 2-3/4 inch backset or 1 x 2-1/4 inches at 2-3/8.
14) Which commercial lever handles a 2 inch thick door?
The Delaney E Series MD lever carries an adjustable mounting plate rated for door thickness of 1-3/8 inch through 2 inch, and it is a BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 lock tested to 400,000 cycles. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 adjusts 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, so on a thicker leaf, such as a heavy custom or clad door, the Delaney range is the one that reaches.
15) What finishes does the Delaney E Series MD lever come in?
Two: US26D dull chrome and US19 black. US26D is the satin chrome that matches most commercial door hardware already hanging in office and multi-family buildings, and US19 is a flat black for openings specified dark. If you are standardizing a floor, pick one and order the whole run in it, since only these two are made in this style.
