Delaney Hardware 3M5042 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What does the storeroom function on the Delaney E Series MD lever actually do at the door?
The outside lever is always locked. A key in the outside lever retracts the deadlocking latch bolt, and the inside lever always turns free for egress. Nothing stays unlocked between uses, so it suits storage rooms, mechanical closets and janitor rooms where you want the door secure every time it closes and no one has to remember to lock it.
2) What door prep do I need to bore for this Delaney cylindrical lever?
Cross bore is 2-1/8 inches, edge bore 1 inch. Latch face prep depends on backset: 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches for the 2-3/4 inch backset, 1 x 2-1/4 inches for the 2-3/8 inch backset. That 2-1/8 inch cross bore is the standard cylindrical prep, so an existing bored door usually takes it with no new holes.
3) Which backset should I order, 2-3/4 or 2-3/8?
Backset is a required selection. 2-3/4 inches is the standard with the UL latch; 2-3/8 inches is the option. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing 2-1/8 inch cross bore and match it. On commercial openings 2-3/4 is the usual, 2-3/8 shows up on residential-width doors. The latch faceplate size changes with the backset, so the mortise in the door edge has to match too.
4) Will this Delaney storeroom lever latch into my existing 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike?
Yes. It ships with a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike (9109), the standard commercial frame strike, and the bolt is a 1/2 inch stainless steel throw. If your frame already has ANSI strike prep, the lock drops straight in.
5) Can I use this Delaney lever on a fire rated storeroom door?
The latch bolt meets a 3-hour fire rating, and the 2-3/4 inch backset latch is the UL latch. Storeroom function is a proper fire-door function since the outside lever stays locked and the inside lever always releases for egress.
6) Can I key these Delaney storeroom levers into my existing Schlage or Kwikset keys?
Keyway is a required selection: SC4 6-pin is standard, with KW1 5-pin and SC1 5-pin as options. SC4 and SC1 are Schlage keyways, KW1 is the Kwikset keyway, so you can match whichever key system is already on the building. Keying is also specified at order: keyed different, keyed alike, or a key charge option if you need something else.
7) What lever should I use on a restroom door instead of the Delaney E Series MD storeroom lockset?
The Delaney E Series MD lever is a storeroom function - the deadlocking latch is retracted by key in the outside lever or by turning the inside lever, and the outside lever stays locked at all times. That is wrong for a restroom, where an occupant needs to lock the door from inside without a key. For that opening use the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20, a privacy indicator leverset with a red/green occupancy indicator so the status is visible from the corridor. It is offered in both 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backsets, the same two backsets the Delaney MD storeroom lever is ordered in.
8) Is the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 a substitute for a Grade 2 keyed storeroom lever?
No. The Delaney E Series MD leverset is a keyed storeroom lock that meets and exceeds BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles, and it takes a cylinder - SC4 6-pin standard, with KW1 5-pin and SC1 5-pin options. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 is a privacy function lever with an occupancy indicator, rated standard duty commercial, and it is not keyed, so it cannot secure a storage or equipment room that needs key control. Use it only where the door is meant to be locked by the occupant.
9) Is the Delaney E Series MD lever rated well enough for a school or apartment building storeroom?
It is a commercial Grade 2 lockset that meets and exceeds BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles, and it meets Federal Standard FF-H-106C. Grade 2 is the normal spec for moderate-traffic back-of-house doors; for main entries or high-abuse openings a facility would typically spec Grade 1 instead.
10) Will the lever break if a tenant hangs on it or forces the locked side?
The outside lever uses a clutch, so when it is locked the lever rotates free instead of transferring force into the lock body. Delaney calls it panic proof push/turn. It also runs an independent torsion spring to keep the lever from sagging, an anti-friction latch retractor, removable through bolts and concealed mounting screws.
11) Which latch comes with the Delaney E Series storeroom leverset?
Keyed storeroom function uses the entrance latch: E9070T at the 2-3/4 inch backset as standard, E9060T for 2-3/8 inches. Faceplate is square corner, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches on the 2-3/4 latch and 1 x 2-1/4 inches on the 2-3/8. The pass/privacy latches (E9073T and E9063T) are not what this function takes.
12) Will a privacy indicator lever work on a 2 inch thick door like the Delaney E Series MD storeroom lever does?
The Delaney E Series MD storeroom leverset uses an adjustable mounting plate and covers door thicknesses from 1-3/8 inch to 2 inch. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 privacy indicator lever is adjustable from 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, so on a thicker slab the Delaney MD is the one that spans the range. On standard 1-3/4 inch commercial doors either thickness range is satisfied.
13) Can I standardize a building on one cylindrical lever and mix storeroom and restroom functions?
Yes, and the door prep stays the same across both. The Delaney E Series MD cylindrical leverset uses a 2-1/8 inch cross bore, 1 inch edge bore and a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike, with a 1/2 inch stainless steel latch throw that meets a 3-hour fire rating - fit it on storage, mechanical and tenant doors that need key control. For interior restrooms and single-occupant rooms in the same building, the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 privacy indicator lever handles the same 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backsets, so the bore centerline you lay out does not change from door to door.
14) What finishes does the Delaney E Series MD storeroom lever come in?
Two finishes: US26D dull chrome and US19 black. US26D is the usual choice when you are matching existing satin chrome or brushed hardware in a commercial corridor; US19 black matches dark contemporary trim.
