Delaney Hardware 3S5042 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Delaney E Series SD storeroom leverset fit a 1-3/8 inch door, or does it need a 1-3/4 inch door?
Both work. The E Series SD lever uses an adjustable mounting plate covering 1-3/8 inch through 2 inch doors, so it goes on older 1-3/8 inch interior doors and standard 1-3/4 inch commercial doors without a different part. That 2 inch upper limit also covers thicker doors that a lot of cylindrical locks stop short of.
2) What does storeroom function mean on a Delaney E Series lever, and is it the right function for a mechanical or supply room?
Storeroom means the outside lever is always locked. You get in with a key in the outside lever; the inside lever always retracts the latch freely for egress. There is no button or thumbturn to leave it unlocked, so the door cannot be accidentally left open, which is why it is the usual pick for mechanical rooms, electrical closets, supply rooms and janitor closets. If you want staff to be able to unlock the door and leave it unlocked during the day, storeroom is the wrong function.
3) Will the Delaney E Series lever drop into the existing bore on my door?
It uses the standard cylindrical prep: 2-1/8 inch cross bore and 1 inch edge bore. If the door already has a knob or lever in it cut to that prep, the E Series goes back in the same holes. The only thing to match is backset, since the latch face differs: at 2-3/4 inch backset the face is 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches, at 2-3/8 inch it is 1 x 2-1/4 inches, square corner.
4) Do I have to pick a backset when ordering the Delaney E Series storeroom lever?
Yes, backset is a required choice: 2-3/4 inch or 2-3/8 inch. The 2-3/4 inch is the standard UL latch and ships with the E9070T latch; 2-3/8 inch is the option and uses the E9060T. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing bore before you order, because the latch face size changes with it.
5) Will the Delaney E Series lever latch into the strike already in my frame?
The bolt has a 1/2 inch stainless steel throw and the lock ships with a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike (9109). If your frame is prepped for a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike, which is what commercial hollow metal frames normally carry, the included strike drops in. A wood frame with a small T-strike or full-lip strike cutout will need the frame mortised out for the ANSI strike, or a different strike.
6) Can the Delaney E Series storeroom lever be keyed alike with my Schlage or Kwikset keys?
Keying is a required selection. The standard cylinder is an SC4 6-pin; KW1 5-pin and SC1 5-pin are the options, so it can be cut to a Schlage or Kwikset keyway to run on a key system you already have. You choose keyed different or keyed alike at the same time. Match the keyway to the key your existing doors use, not just to the brand name on the lock.
7) My door is 2 inches thick. Which cylindrical leverset will actually fit?
The Delaney E Series SD covers 1-3/8 inch up to 2 inches on its adjustable mounting plate, so it handles the thick door. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 indicator lever stops at 1-3/4 inches, so it will not reach on a 2 inch leaf. On thick doors, check the stated thickness range before you check anything else, because everything else about the lock is irrelevant if the through bolts do not land.
8) What should I use on a single-occupancy restroom instead of a keyed storeroom lever?
A storeroom lever is the wrong function for a restroom door. The Delaney E Series SD leverset is a storeroom function: the outside lever is always locked and is released only by key, so anyone using the room needs a key to get in. For a single-occupancy restroom you want the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20, a privacy leverset with a red/green occupancy indicator that shows at a glance whether the room is in use, and it is offered in the same 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backsets, so the door prep is the same either way.
9) Is a privacy indicator lever an equivalent swap for a keyed storeroom lever?
No, they are different functions and they are not interchangeable. The Delaney E Series SD is a Grade 2 storeroom lock: keyed outside, deadlocking latch, outside lever always locked, meeting BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 is a privacy function with a red/green occupancy indicator, rated standard duty commercial, and privacy locks are thumbturn-operated from inside rather than keyed. If the door secures stock, mechanical, or IT space, the storeroom function is what does that job; if the door is a restroom or changing room, the indicator lever is.
10) Does the Delaney E Series lever come in a small format interchangeable core version?
There are two cylinder builds. The standard cylinder version comes keyed as specified. The other is SFIC, small-format 6-pin interchangeable core, supplied less core, so a locksmith or facility with its own SFIC system drops in their own core. Order the less-core version with no keyway and no keying selected, since you are supplying the core.
11) Is Grade 2 enough for an office building corridor, or do I need Grade 1?
Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles covers offices, multi-family common areas, schools and light to medium commercial traffic, which is where most storeroom and closet doors live. Grade 1 is the heavier tier for high abuse and high cycle openings like a main entrance or a stairwell in constant use. For a supply closet or a mechanical room that opens a few times a day, Grade 2 is the correct spec, not a compromise.
12) Do I need to worry about handing when I order a Delaney E Series cylindrical lever?
No handing to specify. Cylindrical locksets of this type are non-handed, and the latch is reversible on the job for a left or right hand door. What you do have to get right at the order stage is backset, keyway and keying, and whether you want the standard cylinder or the SFIC less-core version.
13) I need a restroom lock, not a storeroom lock. Is there an alternative to the Delaney E Series?
Storeroom is key-in only from the outside and cannot be left unlocked, so it is wrong for a restroom. For that opening, look at the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 privacy indicator leverset, which is a privacy function with a red and green occupancy indicator and covers both 2-3/8 and 2-3/4 inch backsets, adjustable for 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inch doors. The indicator saves people trying the handle on an occupied stall or single-user restroom.
14) Which lever handles a 2 inch thick door?
The Delaney E Series SD leverset covers 1-3/8 inch through 2 inch door thickness on an adjustable mounting plate, so it takes thicker slabs and gasketed or built-up doors that many cylindrical levers will not. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 adjusts from 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch. On a door measuring over 1-3/4 inch, the Delaney E Series SD is the one that fits.
15) Will this Delaney lever match the dull chrome hardware already on my other doors?
The finish is US26D dull chrome, also called satin chrome. That is the most common commercial finish, so it lines up with the satin chrome closers, hinges and exit devices already on most institutional openings. If your existing doors are US32D satin stainless, the tone is close but not identical, worth checking against a sample if the doors sit side by side.
16) What does the clutch and panic proof design on the Delaney E Series actually do for me?
Two things that show up in service calls. The clutch means the outside lever spins free when locked instead of transferring force into the spindle, so someone yanking on a locked lever does not break the lock. Panic proof push and turn means the inside lever retracts the latch even under pressure on the door, so egress is not blocked. It also has an independent torsion spring to keep the levers from sagging and an anti-friction latch retractor for doors under a bit of frame pressure.
17) Are the mounting screws on the Delaney E Series visible on the inside rose?
No, the mounting screws are concealed, so the interior side reads clean with no exposed fasteners. The through bolts are removable, which matters when you are pulling locks for rekeying or swapping a lock between doors during a turnover rather than installing once and leaving it.
18) Do I need a Grade 1 lock, or will a Grade 2 storeroom lever hold up on a commercial door?
The Delaney E Series SD storeroom leverset is certified to BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000 Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles and meets the FF-H-106C federal standard, with a 1/2 inch stainless steel latch throw that meets a 3-hour fire rating and a clutch mechanism that is panic proof push/turn. That covers commercial storage, mechanical, and back-of-house openings where the traffic is staff-only. Among the comparable levers, the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 is rated standard duty commercial. Specify Grade 1 only where your facility standard or the door schedule calls for it on high-traffic public openings.
