Delaney Hardware 3S5002 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) Will the Delaney E Series SD entrance lever fit a 1-3/8 inch door, and what about a thicker 2 inch door?
Both work. The E Series SD entrance leverset covers 1-3/8 inch through 2 inch doors on an adjustable mounting plate, so the same lock handles an older interior door and a thicker commercial or exterior slab without a separate kit. Standard commercial doors at 1-3/4 inches sit right in the middle of that range.
2) What backset do I order for a Delaney E Series entrance lever, and what door prep does it need?
Backset is a required choice: 2-3/4 inch is the standard UL latch, 2-3/8 inch is the option. Prep is a 2-1/8 inch cross bore with a 1 inch edge bore either way. The latch face changes with the backset: 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches at 2-3/4 inch backset, 1 x 2-1/4 inches square corner at 2-3/8 inch. Measure from the door edge to the center of the existing 2-1/8 inch bore before you pick, because the wrong backset will not reach.
3) Will the Delaney E Series lever latch into the strike already in my frame?
It ships with a 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike (9109) and a 1/2 inch stainless steel bolt throw. If your frame is prepped for a full 4-7/8 inch ANSI strike, it drops straight in. If the existing opening has a small T-strike or a round-corner residential strike, the frame cutout will not match the ANSI plate and you will be patching the jamb or reworking the prep.
4) Which keyway does the Delaney E Series entrance lever take, and can I key it to my existing Schlage or Kwikset keys?
Keyway is a required selection: SC4 6-pin is standard, with KW1 5-pin and SC1 5-pin available. SC4 and SC1 are Schlage keyways, KW1 is Kwikset, so a building already running one of those can stay on the same key. Keying is specified separately as keyed different or keyed alike, so a property manager can put a whole floor on one key.
5) Can I put the Delaney E Series SD lever on my building's small format interchangeable core system?
Yes. Besides the standard cylinder, the SD entrance lever is offered in a small-format 6-pin interchangeable core version supplied less core, so your locksmith drops in the cores you already stock and rekeys with a control key instead of pulling the lock apart. Order that version with the keyway and keying set to None, since you are supplying the core.
6) Is a Grade 2 cylindrical lever enough for an office or apartment corridor door, or do I need Grade 1?
Grade 2 is the normal specification for apartment entries, office doors, and light to moderate commercial traffic. This E Series lever meets and exceeds BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles, and also meets the FF-H-106C federal standard, which matters on government and institutional work. For a high-abuse opening like a school corridor or a main entrance running all day, step up to a Grade 1 cylindrical or a mortise lock instead.
7) Can a Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 indicator leverset be used in place of a Delaney E Series SD entrance leverset?
No - they are different lock functions, and one will not do the other's job. The Delaney E Series SD lever is an entrance function: it locks from the outside with a key and locks or unlocks from the inside with a turn-button, so it secures an opening that needs key control. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 is a privacy function with a red/green occupancy indicator, which is what goes on a restroom or a single-occupancy room where someone outside needs to see whether the room is in use. If the door takes a key, the SD entrance lever is the one; if the door only needs to be held private from the inside and read from the outside, the INDLEV-20 is.
8) Which lever handles a 2 inch thick door?
The Delaney E Series SD entrance leverset does. It has an adjustable mounting plate covering 1-3/8 inch through 2 inch door thickness. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 indicator leverset adjusts from 1-3/8 inch to 1-3/4 inch, so for the thicker slab the Delaney SD lever is the one that fits.
9) How does the keyed entry function on the Delaney E Series lever actually work day to day?
Outside lever locks with the inside pushbutton, and unlocks by key from outside or by turning the inside lever. Closing the door does not release the button, so it stays locked behind you. Turn the button to horizontal and it stays fixed in the locked position, which is how you hold a door locked for a period. The inside lever always retracts the latch, so the door is free egress at all times.
10) Can this Delaney lever be used on a fire rated door assembly?
The latch bolt on the E Series meets a 3-hour fire rating, and the 2-3/4 inch backset latch is the UL latch. Order the 2-3/4 inch backset when the opening is a labeled fire door.
11) I need levers on a run of restroom doors and on the keyed office doors, and I want the same backset prep throughout - what pairs up?
Both cover the two standard cylindrical backsets, so the door prep stays consistent across the run. The Delaney E Series SD leverset is ordered in 2-3/4 inch or 2-3/8 inch backset, and the Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 is built for 2-3/8 inch and 2-3/4 inch backset as well. Put the SD entrance lever on the keyed office doors and the INDLEV-20 privacy indicator lever on the restrooms, and the crossbore centerline is the same door to door.
12) Is there a lever that meets a Grade 2 spec on the drawing?
The Delaney E Series SD entrance cylindrical leverset is a Grade 2 lock that meets and exceeds BHMA/ANSI A156.2 Series 4000, Grade 2 at 400,000 cycles, and also meets the FF-H-106C federal standard. The Cal-Royal INDLEV-20 indicator leverset is rated standard duty commercial, so where the drawing calls out an ANSI grade by number, the Delaney SD lever is the one that answers it.
13) What finish is the Delaney E Series SD leverset, and will it match my other satin chrome hardware?
US26D dull chrome, the satin chrome finish used on most commercial closers, exit devices, and hinges. If the rest of the openings in the building are 626 satin chromium, US26D is the matching designation and it will read the same on the door.
14) Which latch comes with the Delaney E Series entrance lever if I need a spare or a replacement?
The entrance function uses the E9070T latch at 2-3/4 inch backset, or the E9060T at 2-3/8 inch. Passage and privacy functions in the same series use the E9073T and E9063T. All four take the same square corner faceplate sizes, 1-1/8 x 2-1/4 inches on the 2-3/4 inch latch and 1 x 2-1/4 inches on the 2-3/8 inch.
15) Is this Delaney lever panic proof, and will it stand up to being yanked on in a rental building?
The E Series uses a clutch push/turn panic proof mechanism, so the outside lever turns free when locked instead of transferring force into the spindle, which is what usually kills a cheap lever after a few hundred pulls. It also runs an independent torsion spring so the lever does not droop, an anti-friction latch retractor, and removable through bolts with concealed mounting screws, so the trim tightens back down without exposed fasteners.
