1) Do I need a ceiling radiation damper on a bath fan in a fire rated ceiling?
If the fan penetrates the ceiling membrane of a fire resistance rated floor/ceiling or roof/ceiling assembly, the opening has to be protected, and that is what this damper does. The SIG-CRD uses a folded curtain style blade to limit radiant heat transfer through the air inlet/outlet opening, and it covers assemblies rated up to and including 3 hours. On a bath fan in a non-rated ceiling, such as a single family attic with no rated assembly below, no radiation damper is required.
2) Is the Delta Breez SIG-CRD UL listed for 3 hour fire rated assemblies?
Yes. It meets both UL 555C and UL 263, is UL and cUL listed, and exceeds UL 555C for use in 3-hour fire rated assemblies. The UL 555C listing is R27832. It is also Warnock-Hersey certified for fire rated floor/ceiling and roof/ceiling assemblies under listing 102195501SAT-002, and carries CSFM listing 3226-0368:104.
3) Does the ceiling radiation damper mount in the ceiling or up in the duct run?
It installs at the ceiling membrane itself, at the point of origin, not somewhere up the duct. That is the difference between a ceiling radiation damper and a duct-mounted fire damper: the radiation damper protects the membrane penetration where the fan grille sits, so it goes in with the fan housing rather than being spliced into the 4 inch duct downstream.
4) Is the SIG-CRD damper for combustible or non-combustible ceiling construction?
Both cases are documented. Delta publishes an installation manual for non-combustible construction alongside the standard instructions, and the UL fan/damper listing covers wood frame designs on the combustible side. Match the manual to the assembly you are building, because the framing details and clearances differ between the two.
5) Can I add a ceiling radiation damper to a Delta Breez Signature fan already installed in a rated ceiling?
Yes, the SIG-CRD is a separate accessory ordered on its own, so it can go onto an existing Signature fan provided the fan is one of the listed models (SIG80, SIG110 and SIG80-110 families, including the D, L, H, M and LED variants). Retrofitting means opening the ceiling around the housing, since the damper seats at the membrane. One model is sold, SIG-CRD, so there is no size or handing choice to make.
