1) Can I use a ceiling radiation damper in a 2-hour or 3-hour fire rated ceiling assembly?
The SMT-CRD is rated for floor/ceiling and roof/ceiling assemblies with a fire resistance rating up to and including 3 hours, so a 2-hour assembly is covered as well. It is UL and cUL listed and exceeds UL 555C (listing R27832), and it is Warnock-Hersey certified under listing 102195501SAT-002. CSFM listing is 3226-0368:104.
2) Does a ceiling radiation damper do the same job as a backdraft damper on a bath fan?
No. The SMT-CRD is a fire protection device, not an airflow check device. It uses a folded curtain style blade that closes to limit radiant heat transfer through the inlet/outlet opening in the ceiling membrane at the point of origin. Backdraft control on a Delta BreezSmart fan is handled by the fan itself; the radiation damper is what the code official is looking for when a rated ceiling is penetrated.
3) Is there a different install procedure for combustible versus non-combustible construction?
Yes, and they are separate documents. Delta publishes one installation manual for combustible assemblies and a second for non-combustible, both available as PDFs. This matters for fan selection too: the SMT130 and SMT150 family is listed with the damper for both construction types, while the SLM models are listed for non-combustible only.
4) I am ordering fans for a multi-family job with rated ceilings. Is the damper included with the fan?
No. The SMT-CRD is ordered separately from the Delta BreezSmart fan, one damper per rated ceiling penetration.
