Deltana 8BB 8" Barrel Bolt, Stainless Steel

The 8BB measures 8 inches, which is the full bolt assembly length and the number that decides whether it spans from your door stile across to the frame or the adjoining door leaf. Eight inches is a long barrel bolt, so it wants a reasonable amount of flat, unobstructed stile or rail to land on. Measure the flat area on the door face before ordering, not the door width.

Inside face only. A barrel bolt surface mounts on the interior side of the door and throws into a strike on the frame or the opposite leaf, so it can only be operated by someone already in the room. That makes it a secondary security device that backs up a keyed lock rather than replacing one, and it is why it works well on bedroom, bathroom, storage, shed, and gate applications.

Solid stainless steel, both the bolt body and the substrate. That is the material to reach for on a door that sees moisture, a coastal opening, or a bathroom and utility door where a plated steel bolt eventually pits and stains. The 8BB is a residential-duty bolt, so for a high-traffic commercial opening you would step up to a heavier commercial surface bolt.

Treat it as a supplement, not the primary lock. Deltana positions the barrel bolt as extra security while other locks are not in use, meaning it adds a second point of restraint when someone is inside. It cannot be keyed or operated from the exterior, so any door that has to be secured when you leave still needs a keyed deadbolt or lockset.

Barrel bolts like the 8BB surface mount, so there is no mortising involved and they go on an existing door with just screws. Flush bolts sit recessed into the door edge and need a routed pocket, so they are the pick when you want the hardware to disappear or the door edge must stay clean, such as the inactive leaf of a pair. If the door is already hung and you want the job done without machining it, the surface mounted barrel bolt is the simpler answer.

The 8BB ships as a single configuration, model 8BB-32D. There are no alternate finish or length choices to specify on this bolt, so ordering is one line item with no options to sort out.
