The CSA12HD is the heavy-duty version of Deltana's colonial casement stay, built with a 3/8 inch diameter solid brass rod rather than a lighter gauge. That rod diameter plus solid brass construction is what carries a heavier wood or steel casement sash and holds it at the set position. The sash plate and sill plate are each 2-1/4 x 1 inches, so the load spreads across a reasonable footprint on both the sash and the sill.

The stay bar itself measures 12 inches, so the sash swings out until the bar reaches the end of its travel from the sill plate. Measure from where you intend to mount the sill plate on the frame to the mounting point on the sash: you need at least 12 inches of clear run for the bar to lay along, and the open angle you get is set by that geometry rather than by any adjustment on the part. If the opening is small or the sash is short, a shorter stay is the better choice; the 12 inch length suits taller casement and awning sash where you want a wide open position.

Both plates are 2-1/4 x 1 inches, so you need a flat bearing area of at least that on the sash face and on the sill or frame face. On a narrow muntin or a thin sash rail, check the 1 inch dimension against the rail before you drill: a rail narrower than about an inch will not take the plate square, and the fasteners will land in the edge of the wood.
