Deltana DSAT3-L – Frequently Asked Questions
1) What hinges does the Deltana DSAT3-L acorn tip finial fit?
The DSAT3-L large acorn tip is made for Deltana DSB66 hinges, which are the 6 x 6 inch solid brass hinges. It replaces the plain flat tips on the ends of the hinge barrel. If your hinges are a smaller size than 6 x 6, or another brand, this tip is not the one to order.
2) Is the Deltana acorn hinge tip solid brass or plated steel?
Solid brass through the body, not a plated steel casting. That matters on a decorative tip that sits exposed at the top of the barrel where it gets handled and cleaned.
3) What finish does the DSAT3-L acorn tip come in?
Polished brass is the finish offered on the large acorn tip. If the DSB66 hinges on the opening are polished brass, the tips will match; if those hinges are in a darker or satin finish, the polished tip will read as a different part on the door.
4) Do I need one acorn tip per hinge or two?
A ball-bearing or plain butt hinge barrel has a tip at each end, so a fully dressed hinge takes two of these acorn tips. Count by hinge leaf pairs on the opening: three hinges per door means six tips for a matched look.
5) What is the difference between the large acorn tip and a standard flat hinge tip?
Function is identical, look is not. A flat tip closes the barrel flush; the large acorn tip adds a turned acorn profile that projects above the barrel, the detail typically wanted on period or high-end millwork openings. Because the DSAT3-L is the large version, it is sized to the 6 x 6 DSB66 hinge rather than smaller residential butts.
6) Can I add acorn tips to hinges already hung on the door?
Yes, hinge tips thread or press into the ends of the barrel, so they can be fitted to DSB66 hinges that are already installed without pulling the door. No door prep and no change to the hinge mortise.
7) Is this acorn finial rated for commercial door use or is it residential trim?
Deltana classes the DSAT3-L as commercial door hardware trim. It is a decorative tip, so it carries no load and does not change how the hinge performs, but the solid brass construction holds up in hotel, office, and multi-family corridors as well as it does in a house.
