1) Is the Deltana GB42CP 42-inch grab bar ADA compliant?
Yes, the GB42CP is listed as ADA compliant. It uses a 1-1/2 inch bar diameter, which is within the graspable range ADA requires, and the wall clearance (inside projection) is 2 inches. 2) Why does the 42-inch Deltana grab bar have a center post, and do I need to hit a stud for it?
At 42 inches the GB42CP carries a third mounting point in the middle of the bar in addition to the two end flanges. That center post spreads the load on a long span, which is what a bar this length needs to carry an adult's weight. Practically, it means you need solid backing at three points, not two: blocking or studs at both ends and at the mid-span. If you only have backing at the ends, plan on adding blocking behind the finished wall or choose a shorter two-flange bar instead.
3) How much space does this grab bar take off the wall, and how wide are the mounting flanges?
Total projection from the finished wall is 3-1/2 inches, with 2 inches of clear space between the bar and the wall for your hand. Each wall flange is 3-1/8 inches wide, so lay that out when you are working near a corner, a toilet paper dispenser, or a shower valve. Bar itself is 1-1/2 inches in diameter.
4) What does concealed screw mean on this Deltana grab bar?
The fasteners do not show once the bar is installed. You mount a base plate at each flange location, then the escutcheon cover slides over it and hides the screw heads. The finished look is a clean flange with no visible hardware, which is why concealed screw bars get specified in hotel and healthcare washrooms where exposed fasteners get picked at. It does mean you set the base plates first and dress the covers last.
