Design Hardware 1000V-33-US26 – Frequently Asked Questions

1) What is the minimum stile width for the Design Hardware 1000V surface vertical rod device?
4-1/2 inches. The center case measures 8" x 2-7/8" x 2-13/16", and that case is what drives the 4-1/2 inch minimum stile. On a narrower aluminum stile you need a true narrow stile device instead, such as the Von Duprin 3327A or the Corbin Russwin ED4400.
2) Does the Design Hardware 1000V come handed, or can I re-hand it on site?
It ships right hand reverse and is re-handed in the field, so a single device covers either swing. That makes it practical to stock one part number across a building instead of ordering by hand for each opening.
3) Will the 1000V secure a pair of doors without a mullion?
Yes. Being a surface vertical rod device, it latches at the head and at the floor rather than into the jamb, so a pair of doors is secured with no center mullion. The top latch is a U shape that engages the head strike and the bottom is a drop bolt that drops into a flat strike and a hole in the floor.
4) Can I use an electric strike with the Design Hardware 1000V?
No. The U shaped top latch on the 1000V is not electric strike compatible. If you need electrified access control on this device, the options are ELR motorized electric latch retraction, ED electric dogging, REX request to exit, and LBM latch bolt monitoring.
5) What is the closest equivalent to the Design Hardware 1000V 33 inch from a major brand?
The 1000V is a Grade 1, non fire rated, wide stile surface vertical rod panic device with hex key dogging, fully reversible in the field. The Von Duprin 7827-3ft is a Grade 1 surface vertical rod device for 3 foot doors with hex key dogging, non fire rated, for 1-3/4 inch doors. The Von Duprin 2227-3FT is a Grade 1 non fire rated wide stile device for 36 inch doors and is non-handed. Falcon 25-V-EO 3FT is a Grade 1 wide stile exit only device for 1-3/4 inch doors, and Corbin Russwin ED5400 is a Grade 1 wide stile device that accepts trim.
6) How much does the 1000V push bar stick out from the door face?
Projection is 3-3/8 inches with the pushbar neutral (undogged) and 2-13/16 inches with the bar depressed and dogged. Use the 3-3/8 inch figure when you are checking clearance against a door in an alcove, a return wall, or a second leaf.
7) Will the 1000V work on a 9 foot or 10 foot tall door?
Standard rods cover a 7'-0" door. Extended top rods are available for doors up to 10'-0" tall, and you need to call that out on the order. UL panic listing runs to 8'-0" x 10'-0" openings, and less bottom rod to 8'-0" x 8'-0".
8) Do I need to order anything else to finish the 1000V install?
The device comes with a latch filler and with wood, machine and self tapping machine screws (the F1000V includes thru bolts). Exterior trim is separate, and lever trim is what gets the opening to ADA per ANSI A117.1. Shim kits and cylinder dogging kits are also available, the latter for new or existing devices.
9) Is there an undercut requirement for the bottom latch on a surface vertical rod device like the 1000V?
A 1/4 inch door undercut is recommended where you have a 1/4 inch threshold or no threshold at all. The bottom latch is a drop bolt that needs to clear the floor and drop into its strike, so getting the undercut right at the door shop saves a field fix.
10) Can I hold the doors open during business hours with the 1000V?
Yes, 5/32 inch hex key dogging is standard on the panic version, which retracts the latches and holds the pushbar down for free entry. If you would rather the staff do it with a key instead of an allen wrench, cylinder dogging kits are available and can be added to devices already installed.
11) Is there a lighter duty or Grade 2 vertical rod exit device if the Design Hardware 1000V is more than my opening needs?
The 1000V is a Grade 1 device rated for medium to heavy use with an extruded anodized aluminum channel and steel chassis. If the opening does not call for Grade 1, the TownSteel TS5100 Series 36 by 84 inch is a Grade 2 heavy duty wide stile surface vertical rod device, and the Dexter ED2000 Series is a Grade 2 surface vertical rod panic device. Both are non fire rated, the same as the 1000V. The Orca OED56 Series 36 inch is a standard duty non-handed exit only vertical rod device supplied less bottom rod for 1-3/4 inch doors.
12) The Design Hardware 1000V top latch is not electric strike compatible - what vertical rod device should I look at for an access control opening?
The 1000V uses a U shaped top latch that engages a mechanical strike and is not electric strike compatible, though the series does offer electrified options including motorized electric latch retraction, electric dogging, request to exit and latch bolt monitoring. If you want a different platform for the opening, the Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile crossbar surface vertical rod device that accepts operator trim, and the Corbin Russwin ED4400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile device that accepts trim; both are for 1-3/4 inch doors and are non fire rated.
13) My door is a wood door - is the Design Hardware 1000V or a TownSteel device the better fit?
The 1000V ships with wood, machine and self tapping machine screws, and the F1000V version includes thru bolts, so wood door mounting hardware is covered. Among the TownSteel devices, the ED8927 36 by 84 inch Grade 1 wide stile and the ED3727 36 by 84 inch Grade 1 narrow stile are both listed as wood door compatible and non fire rated. By contrast, the Von Duprin 7527-3ft and 7827-3ft narrow stile Grade 1 devices are listed as not wood door compatible.
14) I need a dummy vertical rod device to match a functioning one - is the Design Hardware 1000V available that way?
The 1000V 33 inch is a functioning panic exit device with a U shaped top latch and drop bolt bottom latch, not a dummy. If you need a matching inactive device for the opposite leaf, the Sargent 12-8710 is a Grade 1 fire rated surface vertical rod device in a wide stile design with a dummy function.
15) My opening is a 36 inch door - the Design Hardware 1000V comes in 33 inch, is that right or should I order a 36 inch device from another brand?
The 33 inch 1000V is the correct size for a 3 foot wide door, and it can be cut down to fit a 2 foot 8 inch door; the 42 inch version covers 3 foot 8 inch to 4 foot doors. So you do not need to switch brands to get device length matched to a 36 inch leaf. If you prefer a device catalogued at 36 inches, the BEST Precision 2201 Series 36 inch wide stile and the Falcon 20 Series 36 inch Grade 1 wide stile exit only device are both non fire rated surface vertical rod devices.
16) What finishes does the Design Hardware 1000V 33 inch device come in?
Five: 630 satin stainless, 613 dark bronze, 625 bright chrome, 605 bright brass, and 606 satin brass. Finish is applied to the headcover, pushbar, endcap and latches, so those are the parts that will read against your other hardware. A marine grade 316 stainless option is also offered for coastal or pool openings.
17) What kind of traffic is the 1000V exit device rated for?
Medium to heavy use commercial openings. Construction is a heavy duty extruded anodized aluminum channel over a steel chassis, and it meets ANSI A156.3 Grade 1 with a UL panic exit listing.
18) What is the difference between the Design Hardware 1000V and a crossbar style vertical rod device?
The 1000V uses a pushbar with a projection of 3-3/8 inches undogged and 2-13/16 inches when dogged, with the headcover, pushbar, endcap and latches available in US3, US4, US10B, US26 and US32D. A crossbar device works differently: the Corbin Russwin ED7400 is a Grade 1 narrow stile crossbar surface vertical rod device that accepts operator trim. The Sargent 3727 is a Grade 1 wide stile exit only device described with a standard push bar, and the Arrow 3700 Series 30 inch is a Grade 1 wide stile pushpad exit only bar.
19) Are the Dexter ED1000 and ED1500 vertical rod devices direct substitutes for the Design Hardware 1000V?
They sit in the same Grade 1 class. The Dexter ED1000 Series surface vertical rod exit device is Grade 1, and the Dexter ED1500 Series is Grade 1 and non fire rated, which matches the 1000V on grade and fire rating. Where the 1000V differs is in its published configuration: a 4-1/2 inch minimum stile, hex key dogging as standard with cylinder dogging kits available, and a U shaped top latch with a drop bolt bottom latch that secures into a flat strike and a hole in the floor.
